We keep one of the widest drinks ranges in the Netherlands, in a family business on the Brink in Bathmen. For Dutch rums, that means not three or four choices but 32.
Dutch rum distillers are small and young, and their bottles are often released in limited editions. We buy them because we like to show what is happening in our own country, and because the story behind them is usually just as interesting as the bottle.

Sugar cane does not grow here, so Dutch rum distillers work with imported molasses or sugar cane juice. What they control themselves is fermentation, distillation and ageing, and that is exactly where they make the difference.
The Dutch climate matures rum more slowly than the tropical one. A rum that spends three years in cask here loses less to evaporation than in the Caribbean and develops more calmly.
Much Dutch rum is released in small batches, sometimes with the cask number and bottle count on the label. Once a bottle is sold out, it rarely comes back in exactly the same form.

Can you make rum in the Netherlands?
Yes. Sugar cane does not grow here, so the raw material comes from elsewhere, but fermentation, distillation and ageing all happen here. Because of the cooler climate, cask ageing is slower than in the tropics.
