Why here

Rum from the Alps

Stroh is not a Caribbean rum and makes no effort to look like one. It is Inländer-Rum: a Central European category that arose in the nineteenth century, when imported colonial rum was expensive and Austrians made something comparable themselves.

In Austrian cuisine it is indispensable: in Kaiserschmarrn, in Sachertorte, in Jagertee. The high strength is handy for that too: you need little of it.

Can this be called rum?

Yes. European rules require rum to come from sugar cane (molasses, cane syrup or cane juice) and to be distilled to below 96 percent. Where that happens is not specified. Stroh meets that and may therefore be called rum, even though the distillery is in Austria and not in the tropics.

About the house

From Lavanttal to Klagenfurt

  • The house in brief
  • 1832Sebastian Stroh starts out in St. Paul im Lavanttal.

  • 38-80%The range of strengths.
  • JagerteeThe classic winter use.

Sebastian Stroh started in 1832 in St. Paul im Lavanttal in Carinthia. The company later moved to Klagenfurt and has remained in Austrian hands since a management buy-out in 2008.

Inländer means domestic. The term arose to distinguish rum made in the home country from imported colonial rum. Since the late 1990s, its alcohol base must also come from sugar cane.

Jagertee (black tea with rum, sugar and spices) is an institution in the Austrian ski huts. We stock the ready-made version in a half-litre bottle.

Inländer simply means: made here, not imported.

Practical

What these bottles go with

The 38 percent is the bottle for the glass or for tea. The 60 and the 80 are mainly baking bottles: a splash in the batter or over a dessert.

Take care at 80 percent: that is almost twice as strong as regular rum and does not belong in a long drink just like that.
