Caol Ila 12 Years Old alongside Ramón Allones Specially Selected
A peated Islay malt alongside a full Cuban robusto. Two heavyweights that balance each other for exactly that reason.

From the shelf
The bottle
Caol Ila stands on the Sound of Islay, on the east side of the island. This twelve-year-old matured in oak casks and has 43 percent alcohol by volume. The aroma is citrus with peat, oil and smoked meat; on the palate sweet malt, date and toffee with charcoal underneath, and the finish is long.

The combination
Why this works together
Peat smoke and tobacco smoke add up, so this only works if the cigar itself has weight. The Specially Selected does: it is full, earthy and spicy and will not be overpowered. The sweet malt and toffee in the whisky absorb the dryness of the tobacco, where a bone-dry whisky would make the whole thing harsh.
Beside the glass
The cigar
We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

- Ramón Allones Specially Selected Full-bodied Cuban robusto with earth and dark fruit; holds its own against peat.
- Bolívar Royal Corona Equally heavy, a little more peppery; the choice if you want to give the peat a counterweight rather than company.
- Partagás Serie D No. 4 Earthy and spicy, and the best-known full-bodied Cuban robusto.
- Cohiba Robustos Medium to full, with the creamy tone of the house; somewhat milder than the other three.
In the glass
Serving
Neat in a tulip glass, without ice. At 43% ABV you can add a few drops of water; that brings out the sweet malt and keeps the peat in check. Drink in the pauses between puffs, not through them.
