What goes with alcohol-free

Alcohol-free beers, wines, gins and aperitifs are made to take the same place at the table. The pairings therefore follow the same rules as for the version with alcohol.

What drops away is the alcohol, and that carried weight and a warm feeling in the mouth. Makers make up for that with more hops, more spices or some extra residual sugar. You notice that last one with alcohol-free wine: it is more often a little sweeter than the regular kind.

Pay attention to the label. In the Netherlands a drink is called alcohol-free up to at most 0.1 percent by volume; up to 1.2 percent it is called low-alcohol. Zero point zero and alcohol-free are therefore not the same.

How to serve it

Glass
The same glass as for the version with alcohol. An alcohol-free tripel in a beer glass, alcohol-free wine in a wine glass.
Temperature
Cold, but not ice-cold: otherwise you will taste nothing of it.
Neat or mixed
The way the drink is meant to be. Alcohol-free gin does call for a sturdier tonic, otherwise it disappears.

A recommendation of its own for every alcohol-free bottle

The page of every alcohol-free bottle in the shop has a recommendation of its own: something with the meal or drinks, a cheese and something for afterwards, with the shopping list and the preparation.
