What liqueur goes with
Liqueur is distilled with sugar and flavour added: fruit, herbs, nuts, coffee or cream. That sweetness determines where it fits and how you serve it.
The sweetness in a liqueur is not a side issue but the main point. It makes it heavier on the tongue than an ordinary distilled spirit of the same strength, and it calls for a small glass and a small amount.
The rule that always holds with sweet: what you put next to it must be at least as sweet as the liqueur itself. If a drier dessert stands next to it, that dessert tastes sour and flat.
How to serve it
- Glass
- A small tulip glass or a liqueur glass of three to five centilitres.
- Temperature
- Fruit and herb liqueur cool, around ten degrees. Cream and coffee liqueur from the fridge; it becomes syrupy and that is part of it.
- Neat or mixed
- Neat after dinner, or as the sweet half in a cocktail. In a mix, half a measure is often enough already.
What it goes with
- chocolate cake
- tiramisu
- vanilla ice cream
- apple pie
- coffee after dinner
- nuts and dried fruit
- mature cheese with honey
This applies to the type as a whole. What an individual bottle does is on the page of that bottle.

With every bottle of liqueur, a recommendation of its own
The page of each bottle of liqueur in the shop has its own recommendation: something with the meal or with drinks, a cheese and something for afterwards, with the shopping list and the preparation.
