Woodford Reserve alongside Ashton VSG Robusto
A bourbon from Kentucky alongside a hearty Dominican robusto. Sweet cask character against a dark wrapper.

From the shelf
The bottle
Woodford Reserve is a bourbon from the United States, at 43.2 percent ABV. The colour is amber. The nose brings firm notes of grain and wood with fruit and spice alongside; on the palate the whiskey is balanced and silky in structure, with a medium-length, full finish.
The combination
Why this works together
The VSG is a robusto of 137 mm under a dark Ecuadorian wrapper. That wrapper has fermented for longer and therefore gives sweet wood and coffee rather than pepper. Bourbon ages in new oak casks and gets its vanilla and caramel from them. Those two sweet wood notes end up in the same place; the spiciness in the whiskey keeps the whole from becoming too flat.
Beside the glass
The cigar
We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

- Ashton VSG Robusto Dominican robusto of 137 mm with a dark wrapper: sweet wood and coffee next to the cask character of bourbon.
- Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne Robusto Lighter wrapper, drier in tone, so the grain in the whiskey stands out.
- Oliva Serie O Robusto Nicaraguan robusto of 127 mm, more peppery and sturdier.
- Rocky Patel Sungrown Robusto Robusto with a sun-grown wrapper, between the other three in weight.
In the glass
Serving
Neat in a tulip-shaped glass, or with a single large ice cube if you want it rounder. At 43.2 volume percent water is not needed. Drink it in the pauses between puffs.
