Japanese whisky from a beer brewery
Nagahama is one of the smallest whisky distilleries in Japan and works by the motto One Brew, One Barrel: each mash yields about two hundred litres of distillate, roughly one cask. Under the name Amahagan (Nagahama spelled backwards) the house releases its world malt.
We have Edition No.4, finished on Japanese cherry casks. If you want to know whether more is coming, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Nagahama backwards
- Nagahama in four facts
- 1996Nagahama Roman Beer starts out as a brewery.
- November 2016the distillery opens, on its twentieth anniversary.
- 3pot stills of a thousand litres, made in Portugal.
- 200litres of distillate per mash: about one cask.
Nagahama is located in the town of the same name in Shiga Prefecture, on the northern side of Lake Biwa, in a former rice warehouse from the Edo period. The company started in 1996 as Nagahama Roman Beer; in November 2016, on its twentieth anniversary, the whisky distillery was added.
The installation is small: three pot stills of a thousand litres, made by the Portuguese Hoga and heated indirectly with steam. The house works to the motto One Brew, One Barrel: each mash yields about two hundred litres of distillate, roughly one cask. Nagahama is therefore counted among the smallest whisky distilleries in Japan.
Amahagan is Nagahama spelled backwards. It is a world malt: imported malt whisky, mainly from the Scottish Highlands, blended with malt from Nagahama itself and then finished on a particular type of wood. All editions come out at forty-seven percent, without chill filtration and without colouring. No.2 got red wine, No.3 mizunara and No.4 Japanese cherry.
One mash, one cask: whisky is not made much smaller than this.
