Why here

Four sherry types of the same whisky, side by side

The Sherry Cask Quadrilogy is four times the same ten-year-old Armorik, only on a different sherry cask: oloroso, fino, pedro ximénez and palo cortado. You can only taste something like that side by side if a shop stocks all four. We do, individually or as a set.

In addition the whole standard range from the Classic to an eighteen-year-old, plus two oddballs: a bottling on casks that previously held chouchen, the Breton mead, and a six-year-old on STR casks bottled exclusively for the Netherlands. If you do not know which you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

A liqueur distillery that helped France to single malt

  • The distillery in five moments
  • 1900Léon Warenghem starts out in Lannion with herbal liqueurs.
  • 1974Move to the Rest Avel spring on the edge of Lannion.
  • 1987The first Breton blend, WB, comes onto the market.
  • 1998Armorik appears: the first single malt from France.
  • 2015‘Whisky Breton’ becomes a protected geographical indication.

Léon Warenghem began in 1900 in Lannion, on the pink granite coast of Brittany, with herbal liqueurs. Well over a century later the company is still in the hands of the same two families, Warenghem and Leizour. In 1974 the distillery moved to the edge of the town, to the Rest Avel spring (Breton for ‘house of the wind’), which draws its water from the granite bedrock.

In 1983 Gilles Leizour, a pharmacist by training, took it over, and he took the step his surroundings warned him against: making whisky in France. In 1987 came the blend WB, in 1998 Armorik followed, the first single malt of Brittany and of France. Between 2010 and 2012 the late Dr. Jim Swan helped refine the distillation further. He was also involved at Annandale.

Since 2015 ‘Whisky Breton’ has been a protected geographical indication: malting, fermenting, distilling and maturing must all take place in Brittany. Warenghem helped set up that scheme.

Two names on the label

The bottle sometimes says Armorik, sometimes Warenghem, sometimes both. Armorik is the brand name of the whisky, Warenghem the distillery. Armorik refers to Armorica, the Latin name for the area now called Brittany. In the online shop you can search on both names.

The Sherry Cask Quadrilogy

Four times the same ten-year-old whisky at 52.1 percent, and four times a different sherry cask. Available individually or as a complete set.

Frequently asked questions about Armorik

How many bottles of Armorik does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Fourteen bottles, all available immediately. Among them the complete Sherry Cask Quadrilogy, individually and as a set, and a six-year-old bottled exclusively for the Dutch market.

What is the difference between Armorik and Warenghem?

Warenghem is the distillery in Lannion, Armorik is the brand name of the whisky. You will come across both on labels, sometimes together. In the online shop you can search for either.

Which Armorik is best to try first?

The Classic is the logical entry point and also the cheapest. If you want to understand right away what a cask does to whisky, take two bottles from the Quadrilogy and put them side by side.

Is French whisky good?

France drinks more whisky per head than any other country and by now makes it too. Armorik was the first French single malt in 1998 and has won international awards ever since. Whether you like it depends on your taste, not on the country on the label.

What is chouchen?

Breton mead, made from honey. Casks that previously held chouchen were used for the Armorik Chouchenn. That is something you typically only come across at a Breton distillery.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Armorik abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
