Why here

Five cask finishes of the same whisky

Arran is one of the few distilleries to offer its cask finishes as a permanent range: amarone, sauternes, port, sherry and quarter cask, all around fifty euros. Anyone who wants to understand what a cask does to whisky has the same starting point five times here, with five different outcomes.

In addition, the whole age range from ten to thirty years, the peated Machrie Moor in two versions, and three single casks from Claxton’s, Cadenhead’s and A.D. Rattray. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The core range

From ten to eighteen years

The regular range, almost all at 46 percent and without chill filtration.

About the distillery

The first legal distillery on the island in a century and a half

  • The distillery in five moments
  • 1994Harold Currie begins building in Lochranza.
  • 1995On 29 June the first spirit runs through the spirit safe.
  • 1998The first bottling appears, a three-year-old.
  • 2010The first peated Arran, Machrie Moor, is released.
  • 2019Sister distillery Lagg opens in the south of the island.

On the island of Arran distilling went on for centuries, but almost always illegally: the bays and the mountains were more favourable than the excise service. The last legal distillery closed around 1840. Only in 1994 did Harold Currie, former director of Chivas, start a new one, in the northern village of Lochranza. On 29 June 1995 the first spirit ran.

The site was chosen for two reasons: the water from Loch na Davie, which comes down via six waterfalls and is immediately usable, and the tourists. The latter worked out well; today tens of thousands of visitors come each year. Financially it was hard for a long time (the company ran at a loss for years), but it is still independent.

In 2019 the same company opened a second distillery, Lagg, in the south of the island. It makes only heavily peated whisky. Since then the original distillery has officially been called Lochranza, while the whisky is still called Arran.

A thirty-year-old Arran comes from the very first casks ever filled here. Older than that is simply not possible.

What is Machrie Moor?

The peated release from Arran, named after a moorland area on the island with prehistoric stone circles. It has appeared annually since December 2010. Since Lagg opened, the peated work has been done there; the Machrie Moor bottles you come across now still come from Lochranza.

Five cask finishes side by side

Frequently asked questions about Arran

How many Arran does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Thirty-two bottles, 31 of them available immediately: the core range from ten to eighteen years, five cask finishes, the peated Machrie Moor, a 25- and a 30-year-old and three single casks from independent bottlers.

Which Arran is best to try first?

The Arran 10 Years Old. That is the bottle the house is known for, and also one of the most affordable ten-year-old single malts at 46 percent and without chill filtration.

What is the difference between Arran and Lochranza?

Since 2019, Lochranza has been the official name of the distillery; Arran remains the name of the whisky. The change came when the company opened a second distillery, Lagg, in the south of the island.

Is Arran peated?

The regular Arran is not. The peated release is called Machrie Moor and has been released since 2010. Since 2019 the peated production has been done at sister distillery Lagg.

Why is there no Arran older than thirty years?

Because the distillery only began distilling in 1995. A thirty-year-old therefore comes from the very first casks. Nothing older exists, and that is also what makes those bottles so sought after.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Arran abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
