Why here

A blend supplier you only get to know through bottlers

Auchroisk was built as a supplier, not as a brand. Almost the entire production goes into blends, and the distillery itself releases only a ten-year-old. Everything else from this house that you can taste comes from independent bottlers.

We have twelve of them on the shelf, from Signatory, Claxton’s, James Eadie, Murray McDavid, The Whisky Cellar, Infrequent Flyers and The Ultimate. The cheapest costs 34 euros, and most are at cask strength. A pleasant way to get to know a distillery you will never come across on the shelf. Not sure which one you need? Just give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

Built around a well, named after a ford

  • 1970The land around Dorie’s Well is purchased after a water survey.
  • 1972Construction begins, commissioned by the owner of J&B.
  • 1974Production starts.
  • 1986The first own bottling appears, under the name The Singleton.
  • 2001The name Auchroisk returns to the label.

Auchroisk stands near the village of Mulben in Speyside and by Scottish standards is young: construction began in 1972, production in 1974. The reason was commercial. Justerini & Brooks needed more malt for the J&B blend and was looking for water similar to that of their Glen Spey distillery. They found it in Dorie’s Well. To be sure, they first had a trial batch distilled with it at Glen Spey; it was satisfactory, and only then was the distillery built.

In Gaelic the name means something like ‘ford over the red stream’, after the Mulben Burn. Pronouncing it is another story: it sounds roughly like ‘oth-rusk’. The owner at the time found this so awkward for foreign customers that from 1986 to 2001 the single malt was simply called The Singleton.

Architecturally, the building stands out: a white, modernist complex in the middle of the heath, from the same wave of construction as Allt-a-Bhainne. It is a working site, not a visitor centre: the public is not admitted.

Test the water first, then build. Auchroisk is the only distillery built around a well.

Frequently asked questions about Auchroisk

How many Auchroisk does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Thirteen bottles, all available for immediate delivery. Only one of them comes from the distillery itself; the other twelve are from independent bottlers.

How do you pronounce Auchroisk?

Roughly like ‘oth-rusk’. In Gaelic the name means something like ford over the red stream. The owner found it so awkward at the time that the whisky was called The Singleton for years.

Why does Auchroisk release so little itself?

Because the distillery was built in 1974 to supply malt for the J&B blend. That is still its main task. There is a regular ten-year-old, and otherwise mainly work from independent bottlers.

Which Auchroisk is best to try first?

The ten-year-old from the distillery itself, or the Murray McDavid at 44.5 percent if you would like to start more affordably. If you want to taste the essence straight away, choose a cask-strength bottling.

What is The Singleton of Auchroisk?

The brand name under which the single malt was sold between 1986 and 2001. Diageo now also uses the name Singleton for other distilleries, so check which one is on the label.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Auchroisk abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
