Eight bottles you will not find in an ordinary wine & spirits shop
The 12 Years and the Three Wood are everywhere. What you rarely see are the old vintages: a 1988 with PX finish, a 1989 of thirty-two years, a 1997 from the bicentenary, and two casks that were only for sale at the distillery itself. Of those eight we have exactly one left of six.
In addition, the standard range from 33 euro and three bottlings from Signatory, Cadenhead’s and The Ultimate. If you are not sure which one you need, just give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Distilling three times, and a night that changed everything

- The distillery in five moments
- 1823The distillery is registered, with an intermediate still added.
- 1941A bombing raid on Clydebank destroys a warehouse full of whisky.
- 1969The then owner rebuilds the distillery completely.
- 1984Morrison Bowmore takes over the distillery.
- 1994Suntory acquires the company in full.
Auchentoshan lies in Clydebank near Glasgow, at the foot of the Kilpatrick Hills. The name is Gaelic for ‘corner of the field’. Officially the distillery dates from 1823, the year of the Excise Act, although distilling had probably taken place on that spot earlier.
What makes Auchentoshan different is the triple distillation. Where the rest of Scotland uses two stills, there are three here: a wash still, an intermediate still and a spirit still. The raw distillate therefore leaves the last still at a very high alcohol content, and many of the heavier aromas stay behind. The result is a light, soft whisky, rarely sharp or angular.
On the night of 13 March 1941 German aircraft bombed the shipyards of Clydebank. A direct hit struck a warehouse holding well over a million litres of maturing whisky. What poured out in flames ran into the Clyde. The distillery was rebuilt after the war.
Triple distillation was once the norm in the Lowlands. Auchentoshan is the only one that has kept doing it for every drop.

Frequently asked questions about Auchentoshan
How much Auchentoshan does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Eighteen bottles, all immediately available. Among them eight old vintages and distillery casks, of six of which we have exactly one left.
What does triple distillation mean?
That the whisky goes through a still three times instead of twice. Auchentoshan has an extra intermediate still for this. As a result the distillate leaves the last still higher in alcohol and many heavier aroma compounds stay behind, which gives a lighter and softer whisky.
Which Auchentoshan should you try first?
The 12 Years Old, or the American Oak if you want to start a little cheaper. If you want to see right away what casks do, the Three Wood is the logical choice: bourbon, oloroso and Pedro Ximenez one after the other.
Is Auchentoshan peated?
No. Unpeated barley is used, and thanks to the triple distillation the whisky is in fact light and soft. If you are looking for smoke, you have come to the wrong address.
What is a distillery cask?
A cask that was sold only at the distillery itself, usually to visitors. Those bottles rarely reach the regular market. We have two: one from 2002 and one from 2011.
Does ’t Bockje also ship Auchentoshan abroad?
Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
