Why here

A blend available in every size

Ballantine’s is not a bottle enthusiasts wait weeks for, but it is one you will find with us in every shape you could want: 20, 35 and 70 centiliter and a liter, plus the twelve- and seventeen-year-old and four bottles from the music series. That is handy, whether you want to fill a single evening or a cabinet.

Important to know: the music editions contain the same whisky as the regular Finest: only the label differs. So do not pay more for the bottle than you would for the contents. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the house

From a grocery shop in Edinburgh to second place in the world

  • The house in five moments
  • 1827George Ballantine opens his shop in Edinburgh.
  • 1865He opens a second business in Glasgow.
  • 1895The company receives a royal warrant.
  • 1930sMiltonduff and Glenburgie are bought to secure the malt.
  • 2005Pernod Ricard takes over the brand via Chivas Brothers.

George Ballantine, a farmer's son, opened a grocery shop in Edinburgh in 1827. Wine was added, and later whisky that he blended himself for regular customers. In 1865 he handed the shop over to his eldest son and started a second, larger business in Glasgow. In 1895 the company received a royal warrant.

A blend is only as good as the malts in it, and that is why in the thirties the then owner bought up two distilleries: Miltonduff and Glenburgie. Within the house those two are called the fingerprint malts and still form the backbone. Around them sits a composition of about fifty single malts and four grain whiskies from all Scottish regions.

Since 2005 the brand has belonged to Chivas Brothers, the whisky arm of Pernod Ricard. Ballantine’s is especially big in Southern Europe and ranks second worldwide, behind Johnnie Walker.

Making a blend is not a matter of mixing until it runs out: the composition must taste the same year after year, with casks that never do that on their own.

What is the difference between a blend and a single malt?

A single malt comes from one distillery and is made entirely from malted barley. A blend combines malts from several distilleries with grain whisky, which is lighter and cheaper. That makes a blend softer and more approachable, and usually considerably better value. Both are whisky; it is not a matter of better or worse but of what you are looking for.

Frequently asked questions about Ballantine’s

How many Ballantine’s does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Eleven bottles, all immediately available: the Finest in four sizes, the twelve- and seventeen-year-old, the Barrel Smooth and four music editions.

Is Ballantine’s a single malt?

No, it is a blend: about fifty single malts from different distilleries, combined with four grain whiskies. The core comes from Miltonduff and Glenburgie.

What is the difference between the Finest and the 12 Years Old?

With the twelve-year-old, every whisky in the blend has matured for at least twelve years. The Finest carries no age statement. You taste that difference mainly in depth and smoothness.

Is there different whisky in the music editions?

No. The John Lennon, Queen, Gorillaz and KISS bottles contain the same Ballantine’s Finest; only the label differs. Buy them for the design, not because you expect a different whisky.

Which Ballantine’s should you choose?

For mixing or an ordinary evening, the Finest. If you want to drink it neat, the twelve-year-old is the logical step up and the seventeen-year-old is the bottle for a special occasion.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Ballantine’s abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
