Why here

Twelve bottles from a range that differs per cask

Ballechin appears mainly in small batches and a few casks, with a different cask type each time: bourbon, madeira, sherry, port. Five of our twelve come from the Straight From The Cask series, in which a single cask goes into the bottle undiluted and unfiltered.

Two of them come from the same 2011 vintage and the same type of cask, but with two years' difference in maturation. Tasted side by side, you can see exactly what those two years do. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Ballechin comes from Edradour, a tiny distillery in the hills near Pitlochry that looks like a whitewashed farmhouse and in fact is one. For years Edradour was regarded as the smallest in Scotland; mashing is still done in a cast-iron tun more than a hundred years old.

In 2002 Andrew Symington, the man behind independent bottler Signatory Vintage, bought the distillery. He brought in the former manager of Laphroaig and in 2003 had heavily peated barley distilled for the first time. That whisky got a name of its own: Ballechin, after a farm distillery a few kilometres away that disappeared in the last century and was known for peated whisky.

Since an expansion in 2018, the peated Ballechin and the unpeated Edradour can be distilled separately. Signatory has its headquarters on the same site.

Fifty ppm of peat is Islay level. Ballechin reaches that in the Perthshire hills, far from the sea.

What does Straight From The Cask mean?

A series in which a single cask goes straight into the bottle: no dilution with water, no chill filtration, no colouring. You get the whisky as it comes from the cask, usually around 55 to 59 percent. These bottles are 50 cl instead of 70, which is important to know when comparing prices.

Frequently asked questions about Ballechin

How many Ballechin does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Twelve bottles, all available immediately, from ten to twenty years old. Five of them are from the Straight From The Cask series.

What is the difference between Ballechin and Edradour?

The same distillery. Edradour is the unpeated whisky, Ballechin the heavily peated one. Since 2003 it has been distilled separately, and since an expansion in 2018 even completely separately.

How smoky is Ballechin?

The barley is peated to about 50 ppm, comparable to the sturdier Islay whiskies. So it is not a light smoke. What makes it different is that there is a full, fruity Highland whisky underneath.

Why are some bottles 50 cl?

The Straight From The Cask series is bottled in 50 cl bottles. Converted to a per-litre price, they are therefore higher than the amount on the label suggests. Good to know when comparing.

Where does the name Ballechin come from?

From a farm distillery a few kilometres from Edradour that disappeared in the last century and was known for peated whisky. When Edradour itself began distilling peated whisky, that whisky took that name.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Ballechin abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
