Why here

Whisky as it used to be, with the cask still in it

Blackadder does something almost no one does any more: the whisky goes into the bottle unfiltered, including the wood particles and natural oils that would otherwise stay behind in the cask. You can see it: all sorts of things float in it. For those who need to get used to it, that is strange; for those who know it, it is precisely the reason to buy these bottles.

We have forty-five in stock, spread across the Raw Cask, Peat Reek, Smoking Islay, Black Snake and Red Snake ranges, plus six bottles from outside Scotland, including two Japanese Shizuokas and an Amrut from India. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The core range

Ten times Raw Cask

Unfiltered from a single cask, with sediment. From Craigellachie and Fettercairn to two vintages of Bunnahabhain.

About the house

Blackadder is not a distillery but a family business that buys and bottles casks from others. Robin Tucek started it in 1995 together with John Lamond; together they also wrote The Malt Whisky File, for years one of the best-known reference works on malt whisky. The name comes from John Blackadder, a seventeenth-century Scottish preacher who ended up a fugitive.

The starting point is that sixty to seventy percent of the flavour comes from the cask. That is why nothing that comes from that cask is taken away: no chill-filtering, no colouring, and with the Raw Cask series even the sediment stays in the bottle. Every bottle is clear glass, so you can see the colour the whisky has taken on by itself.

Whisky as it used to be. What was in the cask is in the bottle, including the bits of wood.

The ranges at a glance

Raw Cask is the main series: single cask, unfiltered, with sediment. Peat Reek covers heavily peated casks, with Embers as a selection from them with an extra cask finish. Smoking Islay is peated Islay whisky whose distillery is deliberately not named. Black Snake lets old malts mature further in sherry casks following a solera system; Red Snake does the same with first-fill bourbon casks.

Peat Reek, Embers and Smoking Islay

Ten peated bottles. For some of them the distillery is deliberately not named; that is part of the design of the series.

Frequently asked questions about Blackadder

How much Blackadder does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Forty-five bottlings, all available immediately. Two bottles from the search results are sold out and are not included.

Why is there so much floating in the bottle?

That is part of it. With the Raw Cask series the whisky is not filtered, so the wood particles and natural oils from the cask stay in the bottle. That is a deliberate choice: those substances contribute to the flavour.

What is the difference between Peat Reek and Smoking Islay?

Peat Reek refers to casks heavily infused with peat smoke; the Embers selection also gets a cask finish. Smoking Islay is peated Islay whisky whose distillery is deliberately not named.

What are Black Snake and Red Snake?

Two series with a solera system: old malts mature further in sherry casks (Black and Sherry Snake) or in first fill bourbon casks (Red Snake). A portion is drawn off and topped up each time, so every bottling differs.

Which Blackadder should you try first?

The Red Snake Redneck 113 is the cheapest way in. If you want to understand right away what this house is known for, take a Raw Cask: undiluted, unfiltered, with sediment.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Blackadder abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
