Why here

Old stock next to a distillery that started over

Bladnoch was idle for years and has only been running at full capacity again since 2017. Anything older than about eight years therefore comes from stock from before that closure, and it is running out. We have three bottles of it: a twenty-seven-year-old, a thirty-year-old and a 1992 vintage from Signatory. Of all three we have exactly one left.

Also the entire core range from 31 euros, three single casks including a bottling selected especially for the Netherlands, and the blends the house puts together itself. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The core range

From Kirkcowan to nineteen years

Five bottles from the standard range, almost all at 46.7 percent.

  • 2017Exactly two hundred years after its founding, production is running again.

Bladnoch lies on the river it is named after, near the village of Wigtown in Dumfries and Galloway. It is the southernmost distillery in Scotland: further south than much of the Scottish Borders, at the same latitude as Newcastle. Because of the scale of its production, it was once nicknamed the Queen of the Lowlands.

Its history is one of ups and downs. The McClelland family kept it going for almost a century, until production stopped in 1905. A Northern Irish distiller from Belfast bought it in 1911 and distilled intermittently until 1937; after that the equipment was sold and shipped to Sweden. In the decades that followed there were more closures than years of operation.

In 2015 the Australian entrepreneur David Prior bought the whole site and had it completely refitted. In 2017, exactly two hundred years after its founding, spirit flowed again. The style is classic Lowland: soft, grassy and floral, partly thanks to stills with a low boil ball that give a lighter distillate.

Wigtown is the book town of Scotland: nowhere in the country are there more bookshops per inhabitant. The distillery is two kilometres away.

Why are those bottles called Vinaya, Samsara and Talia?

The standard range carries names from Sanskrit and Hebrew. Vinaya means respect and gratitude, a reference to the founders. Samsara stands for the cycle of life, Talia for dew from heaven. It is a deliberate break with the habit of naming Scotch whisky after a place or an age.

Frequently asked questions about Bladnoch

How much Bladnoch does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Fourteen bottles, all immediately available: the regular range, three old vintages, three single casks and three blends from the same house.

Which Bladnoch should you try first?

The Vinaya. That is the logical entry point: first fill bourbon and sherry together, at 46.7 percent and without chill filtering. The Kirkcowan is a little cheaper and softer still.

Why is old Bladnoch so scarce?

Because the distillery was idle for a long time and only got going again in 2017. Anything older than about eight years comes from old stock, and that is finite.

What does queen of the Lowlands mean?

An old nickname for Bladnoch, from the time when the distillery had a large production. It is still the southernmost in Scotland, further south than much of the Scottish Borders.

What is Pure Scot?

The blend that Bladnoch itself composes and sells under its own brand name. Bonailie is a blended malt from the same house, so without grain whisky. They are not single malts.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Bladnoch abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
