Why here

Three batches of Barrel Proof, and a cask for the Netherlands

Barrel Proof comes out three times a year, each time with its own strength and its own character. We have three in stock, from 60.5 to 62.1 percent. That is exactly the kind of comparison bourbon drinkers come for: same recipe, different cask, different strength.

In addition, a single cask selected especially for the Dutch market, at 62.7 percent. Not sure which one you should have? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the brand

Named after a minister, made by a family business

  • The brand in four moments
  • 1935The Shapira family starts Heaven Hill in Bardstown, two years after Prohibition.
  • 1986Elijah Craig is released as a small batch bourbon.
  • 1996A fire destroys the distillery and 90,000 casks.
  • 1999Heaven Hill buys the Bernheim distillery; maturation stays in Bardstown.

Elijah Craig was a Baptist preacher who lived in Kentucky between 1738 and 1808. According to tradition he was the first to put corn whiskey in charred oak barrels, the step that makes bourbon bourbon. There is no historical evidence for this, and that is openly acknowledged in the bourbon world.

The whiskey itself comes from Heaven Hill in Bardstown, in the hands of the Shapira family since 1935 and still the largest family-owned distillery in America. Elijah Craig was launched there in 1986 and helped shape the concept of ‘small batch bourbon’: whiskey from a limited number of selected casks instead of from a whole batch.

In 1996 the distillery burned down, with ninety thousand casks inside. The company survived by buying the Bernheim distillery near Louisville in 1999; distilling has taken place there ever since, while maturation stayed in Bardstown.

Barrel Proof is released in batches A, B and C: the first, second and third release of the year. Every batch is different.

What does barrel proof mean?

The whiskey goes into the bottle undiluted, exactly as it comes from the cask. No water is added to arrive at a fixed strength, and it is not filtered. As a result every batch differs: one cask yields 60.5 percent, another 62.1. The label carries a code such as B523: the letter is the release of the year, the digits indicate month and year.
