At the table with The Famous Grouse Port Wood
Whisky, full and rich · Scotland · 40%
Why this works together
Chosen for the type (whisky) and the name (matured in a fortified wine or rum cask). A full, rich whisky goes well with game, dried fruit and desserts with caramel or chocolate.
What is needed
For 4 people
With the mealDates wrapped in bacon
Ingredients
- 12 Medjool dates
- 6 rashers of streaky bacon
Method
- Preheat the oven to 200 °C.
- Remove the stones from the dates if necessary and halve the bacon slices.
- Wrap half a slice of bacon around each date and place them seam side down on a baking tray.
- Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until the bacon is crisp and cooked through.
- Leave to cool briefly and serve warm.
With the cheeseComté
Ingredients
- 160 grams Comté
Method
- Take the cheese out of the fridge about an hour before serving; that brings out the flavour best.

- sea salt
Method
- Preheat the oven to 170 °C.

A cigar with The Famous Grouse Port Wood
By its name this whisky has lain in a sherry or wine cask. We have worked out this cigar alongside Millstone 12 Years Old Sherry Cask Zuidam Distillers, which has that too.

Rocky Patel Vintage 1990
Honduran robusto under a dark Connecticut broadleaf wrapper; coffee and sweet wood alongside the sherry cask.
Why this works together
A dark broadleaf wrapper has fermented for longer and therefore gives coffee, earth and a sweet woody note sooner than pepper. That woody note lies close to what the sherry cask gives the whisky, so the two meet on the same note. The risk here is not a clash but sameness; the 46 percent ABV keeps enough tension to prevent that.
Also good with this whisky
- Ashton Aged Maduro No. 20Dominican with the same broadleaf wrapper, slightly milder and smoother in smoke.
- Oliva Serie O MaduroNicaraguan maduro, somewhat more peppery, which makes the whole less uniform.
- Rocky Patel Vintage 1992From the same line but with an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper: lighter in colour and drier in tone.
We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky.
