Why here

Five variants and four sizes of the same blend

The regular Famous Grouse is everywhere. What you rarely see complete are the variants: Smoky Black, Ruby Cask, Port Wood, Bourbon Cask and Sherry Cask Finish. We have all five, plus the twelve-year-old Gold Reserve.

In addition there are two malt bottlings (a fifteen-year-old in a litre bottle and an eighteen-year-old) and the regular bottle in four sizes, up to a four-and-a-half-litre pouring jug. If you are not sure which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The same whisky, from a half bottle to a serving jug.

About the blend

From a grocer in Perth to Scotland's best-known label

  • The Famous Grouse in four moments
  • 1896Matthew Gloag puts together The Grouse in Perth.
  • 1905The blend will be called The Famous Grouse.
  • 2007The Black Grouse is launched, later Smoky Black.
  • 2025William Grant & Sons takes over the brand from Edrington.

Matthew Gloag was a grocer and wine merchant in Perth when, in 1896, he put together a blend that he called The Grouse. In 1905, when the company became a public limited company, the whisky was given the name under which it is still sold today.

The core of the blend is formed by Highland Park and The Glenrothes. That is no minor detail: in a blend, the choice of malt whiskies determines where the bottle's flavour heads, and both houses have a distinct character.

Around that permanent blend, variants have appeared over the years. The Black Grouse was released in 2007 for the Swedish market and has been called Smoky Black since 2015. The Bourbon Cask and Ruby Cask followed in 2018, the Sherry Cask Finish in 2022. In 2025 the brand passed from Edrington to William Grant & Sons.

With a blend the malts determine the direction. With The Famous Grouse those are Highland Park and The Glenrothes.
