Whisky and cigar
Een goede sigaar duurt een uur, een goede dram ook. Hier staat welke whisky uit ons schap naast welke sigaar standhoudt, en waarom. Vijfenveertig combinaties, door ons uitgezocht.
Waarom het werkt
Twee dingen die tijd vragen
Rook en whisky spreken dezelfde taal: hout, zoet, peper, rook. Het gaat mis zodra een van de twee harder praat. Een milde sigaar naast een Islay-malt is zonde van de sigaar, en een lichte Speyside proeft naar niets naast een volle Nicaraguaan. Kies daarom eerst op gewicht en pas daarna op smaak.
Twee hulpmiddelen. Het zoet uit een sherry- of bourbonvat haalt de scherpte van een pittig dekblad weg. En water: boven de 46 procent prikt de alcohol, en dan valt de rook plat. Een paar druppels in het glas zetten dat recht.
Een sigaar wordt naar het einde voller. Wie twee glazen schenkt, bewaart de zwaarste whisky voor het laatste derde.

Close to home
Deventer rookte mee
Rond 1900 werkten in Deventer zo’n zevenhonderd mensen in de tabak. Tussen 1850 en 1950 telde de stad ruim honderd sigarenfabrieken en kleine makerijen, met merken als Generaal Van Heutz en Indische Kiekjes. Sigarenfabriek De Arend zat vanaf 1900 aan de Brink in Deventer, op nummer 51. ’t Bockje staat ook aan een Brink, op nummer 2, maar dan in Bathmen.
De laatste twee fabrieken, Horst & Maas en Bijdendijk & Ten Hove, sloten in 1952 en 1953. Wat bleef zijn de straatnamen: Tabakswal, Tabaksstraat en Tabaksdwarsstraat.
Iets verder stroomafwaarts, in Kampen, worden sinds 1832 sigaren gemaakt. Daar komt de Hollandse sigaar vandaan zoals veel mensen hem kennen: droog, kort en met een dekblad van Sumatra. Die hoeft niet in een bevochtigde kist en past goed naast een lichte, droge malt.

Wie de geur van een sigarenkamer zoekt, vindt die ook in de fles. In 39 proefnotities uit ons schap staan tabak, leer, ceder of zelfs de sigaar zelf. En 714 whisky’s hebben turf.
Combining
All 45 recommendations
We supply the whisky, not the cigar; the combination works as soon as you choose both at equal strength. Smoke next to smoke adds up: a peated malt holds its own next to heavy tobacco, while a mild cigar disappears beside it. Sweetness from a sherry cask absorbs the pepper from the wrapper, so that both come out softer. A high alcohol percentage makes the mouth sharp and the smoke flat afterwards; a few drops of water put that right.
