Why here

A distillery that barely reaches Europe

The Singleton of Glen Ord is sold by Diageo mainly in Southeast Asia; the European market rarely gets it. What is here are three Special Releases, a thirty-nine-year-old at cask strength and two bottlings under the old name Glen Ord.

We also have two of them in 20 cl bottles, so you can try a Special Release without immediately spending a hundred euros or more. If you are not sure which one to get, just give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

One of the three that make their own malt

  • The distillery in five moments
  • 1838Thomas Mackenzie founds the distillery on the Black Isle.
  • 1878Fire destroys the newly built still house.
  • 1968A large drum maltings is coming that also serves other distilleries.
  • 2006The whisky appears as Singleton or Glen Ord.
  • 2014The capacity is being doubled.

Glen Ord lies near the village of Muir of Ord, north-west of Inverness, on the edge of the Black Isle, an area that has been known for its barley for centuries. Thomas Mackenzie founded the distillery in 1838 on land his family had owned since the thirteenth century.

What makes Glen Ord special is its own maltings. Since 1968 there has been a large drum maltings supplying this distillery with malt, and other Diageo houses too, including Talisker. Occasionally heavily peated malt is made for Islay. Only a handful of Scottish distilleries still malt their own on this scale.

Over the years the whisky has appeared on the bottle under all kinds of names: Glen Ord, Glenordie, Ordie, Ord and Muir of Ord. Since 2006 it has been the Singleton of Glen Ord, a brand that Diageo targets mainly at the Asian market. For Europe that means: little supply, and what there is comes from Special Releases or from bottlers.

When Diageo put together the Classic Malts in 1988, Glen Ord was left out. Among enthusiasts that is still seen as a miss.

Glen Ord or Singleton?

The same distillery. Singleton is a brand name of Diageo under which the whisky of three distilleries appears: Glen Ord, Glendullan and Dufftown. The bottle always states which one it is. Bottlers do not use the brand name and simply put Glen Ord on the label, like the Signatory on this page.

Frequently asked questions about Glen Ord

How many Glen Ord does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Eight bottles, all immediately available: six under the name Singleton of Glen Ord and two under the old name Glen Ord.

Why is Glen Ord so hard to get in Europe?

Because Diageo directs the Singleton of Glen Ord mainly at Southeast Asia. The regular twelve-, fifteen- and eighteen-year-olds are not in ordinary trade here; what does appear are Special Releases and bottlings by third parties.

What is the difference between Glen Ord and Singleton?

None, it is the same distillery. Singleton is a brand name of Diageo for the whisky of Glen Ord, Glendullan and Dufftown. Independent bottlers do not use that name.

What is special about this distillery?

Its own maltings. Glen Ord has made its own malt on a large scale since 1968 and also supplies it to other Diageo distilleries. Only a handful of Scottish distilleries still do that.

Which Glen Ord should you try first?

One of the 20 cl bottles: with that you can taste a Special Release without immediately buying a whole bottle. If you want a full bottle, the Signatory at 57.1 percent is the cheapest way in.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Glen Ord abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
