Why here

The soft side of Scotland

Glenkinchie is the Lowland whisky of the Classic Malts: light, grassy and without sharp edges. For anyone who finds whisky too heavy or too smoky, this is often the bottle that works.

Besides the regular twelve-year-old we have the Distillers Edition with an amontillado finish, and a twenty-seven-year-old Special Release at cask strength. Of that one exactly one is left. Not sure which one to pick? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

The biggest still in Scotland, right next to the city

  • The distillery in four moments
  • 1820sThe Rate brothers start distilling at Pencaitland in East Lothian.
  • 1890Rebuilt as the Glenkinchie Distillery Company.
  • 1988The twelve-year-old becomes the Lowlands representative in the Classic Malts.
  • nowThe nearest distillery visit from Edinburgh.

Glenkinchie lies near Pencaitland in East Lothian, some twenty-five kilometres east of Edinburgh, in the middle of the arable region known as the granary of Scotland. The name comes from the Kinchie Burn, the stream that runs alongside it.

The stills are unusual: the wash still is the largest in all of Scotland. Large stills mean plenty of contact between vapour and copper and a light, clean spirit: the Lowland style. Where Islay is about smoke and Speyside about fruit, here it is about grass, lemon and a dry finish.

When Diageo put together the Classic Malts in 1988, Glenkinchie became the representative of the Lowlands, alongside Talisker, Cragganmore and Dalwhinnie, among others.

In the visitor centre there is a scale model of a distillery from 1924, once made for the British Empire Exhibition.

Frequently asked questions about Glenkinchie

How much Glenkinchie does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Three bottles: the twelve-year-old, the Distillers Edition and a twenty-seven-year-old Special Release of which exactly one is left.

Who is Glenkinchie suitable for?

For those who find whisky too heavy or too smoky. This is a light, grassy Lowland with lemon and a dry finish, with no sharp edges.

What are the Classic Malts?

Six whiskies that Diageo selected in 1988 to represent the Scottish regions. Glenkinchie stands for the Lowlands, alongside Talisker, Cragganmore and Dalwhinnie, among others.

What is the Distillers Edition?

The twelve-year-old that has also spent a period in amontillado casks. That gives a little more body and nutty notes without overpowering the light style.

Why is this whisky so light?

Because of the stills. The wash still at Glenkinchie is the largest in Scotland, and large stills give a lot of copper contact and so a light, clear spirit.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Glenkinchie abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
