Why here

How to make a distillery the neighbourhood’s own

John McKenzie is a farmer, former army officer and helicopter pilot. He wanted to have whisky made again above Dingwall and chose an unusual route: no big investor, but shares for the public. The first issue raised about two point six million pounds in 2016, in seventy-seven days, from more than two thousand people.

After a second round there were more than three thousand shareholders. The distillery was built from January 2017, opened on 30 November 2017 and began distilling in 2018. Everything runs on renewable energy: hydropower, wind, sun and a biomass boiler on wood chips.

A 2018 release, and the third release, Batch 01/19.

About the name

A mountain and two vanished neighbors

  • The distillery in brief
  • March 2015The company is founded.
  • 2016The first share issue.
  • 30 November 2017The official opening.
  • December 2021The first single malt of its own.

The name refers to Ben Wyvis, the mountain above Dingwall, and to two vanished distilleries in the area: Ben Wyvis in Dingwall itself and Glenskiach in Evanton. This is not a reopening of either; it is a new build in a different place.

That made the first own single malt, released in December 2021, special: it was the first whisky made in Dingwall in almost a century. The last distillery in the area closed in 1926.

Batch 01/19 is the third release, at forty-six point five percent, distilled in 2019 and matured in red wine casks, moscatel casks and one Marsala cask. 2019 was a small year: late that year production came to a standstill due to a fire in the fuel storage of the biomass boiler.

More than three thousand owners, and not a single big one.

Practical

What to look out for

The details on the age of the 2018 bottle vary: some sellers say three years, others four. Check the label.

Batch 01/19 is the third release and not the first; the number refers to the batch and the year.

Two bottles.

Where is GlenWyvis located?

Above Dingwall in Ross-shire, at the foot of the mountain Ben Wyvis.

What does community ownership mean?

That the distillery belongs to more than three thousand shareholders, raised through public share issues, instead of to a single owner or a corporation.
