Why here

Six numbered bottles, six casks

Hyde releases its whiskey in a numbered series, in which each number has its own cask finish: sherry, Spanish oak, bourbon, pot still. We have six of them, and together they show well how much direction a finish gives to the same Irish base.

The prices are reasonable: from thirty-three euro, with a ten-year-old single malt at the top. If you do not know which one to get, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Hyde is the brand of Hibernia Distillers, founded in 2014 by the brothers Conor and Alan Hyde in County Cork. The family has been in the drinks trade for generations: from 1640 to 1962 they kept a tavern near Bandon in West Cork, where Irish whiskey and stout were tapped straight from the cask.

The name refers to Douglas Hyde, linguist and founder of the Gaelic League, who was the first president of Ireland from 1938 to 1945. The brothers share a branch of the family tree with him, which is why the series is called President’s Cask.

The house does not distil itself. It buys whiskey from Irish distilleries and puts it into its own casks to mature and finish, paying close attention to the wood. The sherry casks, for example, come from Andalusia and have already served there for twenty years before they are filled here.

The number on the bottle stands for the release in the series, not for the age.
