Why here

A cask that is only for sale in the Netherlands

Clonakilty bottled a single cask from a port pipe especially for the Dutch market, at 53 percent. Such bottles come in limited numbers and are gone afterwards. In addition, we have an eighteen-year-old single cask and a fourteen-year-old grain whiskey on amontillado casks.

The rest of the range is more accessible: five bottles between 36 and 60 euros, including the single pot still this house is known for. If you do not know which one to choose, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

Barley from its own field, maturation above the ocean

  • Scully familyEight generations of farmers on the same land.

  • Galley HeadThe warehouse stands on the cliff above the ocean.

Clonakilty lies in West Cork, on the southwest coast of Ireland. The Scully family has farmed there for eight generations, and that farm is the starting point of the distillery: the barley grows in the fields at the foot of the Galley Head lighthouse, a few kilometres further on.

What makes it special is the maturation. The casks do not lie at the distillery but in a warehouse on the cliff above the Atlantic Ocean, one of the maturation sites closest to the sea in Ireland. Salty air and constant wind work on the wood there.

The stills stand in the centre of the town, behind glass walls that run from floor to ceiling. Anyone walking past looks straight in; in the evening they are lit up.

The gin from the same house is called Minke, after the minke whale that swims along this coast. The statue of a whale’s tail by the road is the landmark of the town.

What is single pot still?

The Irish style par excellence: a blend of malted and unmalted barley, triple distilled in copper stills. That gives a creamy, lightly spicy whiskey. The style was once the standard in Ireland, almost disappeared in the twentieth century, and has recently been taken up again by a handful of distilleries. Clonakilty is one of them.

Frequently asked questions about Clonakilty

How much Clonakilty does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Eight bottles, all available right away, including a single cask bottled only for the Dutch market.

Which Clonakilty should you try first?

The Galley Head single malt is the cheapest way in. If you want to know straight away what this house is known for, take the single pot still: that is the Irish style the distillery is aiming at.

What is special about the maturation?

The casks lie in a warehouse on the cliff above the Atlantic Ocean, one of the maturation sites closest to the sea in Ireland. Salty air and wind influence the wood there and thus the flavour.

What is single pot still?

An Irish style with both malted and unmalted barley, triple distilled. It gives a creamy, lightly spicy whiskey. Once the standard in Ireland, now on the rise again.

Does the barley really grow on their own land?

Yes. The Scully family has farmed in the area for eight generations and grows the barley in the fields by the Galley Head lighthouse, a few kilometres from the distillery.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Clonakilty abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
