Why here

Japanese whisky that is still affordable

Anyone who wants to try Japanese whisky is often startled by the price: Hakushu and Yamazaki start at well over a hundred euros. Hatozaki starts at thirty-eight, and the Pure Malt and Triple Cask Reserve are both at 46 percent.

The distillery is in Hyogo Prefecture, on the Akashi Strait. If you are not sure which one you need, give us a quick call. That is what we are here for.

About the brand

Named after a lighthouse

  • The brand in brief
  • HyogoThe prefecture near Kobe, on the Akashi Strait.
  • HatozakiThe oldest surviving stone lighthouse in Japan.
  • Pure MaltMalt only, from more than one distillery.
  • BlendedMalt topped up with grain whisky.

Hatozaki comes from Hyogo prefecture, the area near Kobe best known for sake. The Nada region has been the centre of Japanese sake production for centuries. The name refers to the Hatozaki lighthouse, the oldest surviving stone lighthouse in the country.

The range consists of two types: a blend, in which malt is combined with grain whisky, and the Pure Malt, which contains only malt but from more than one distillery. In Scotland that would be called a blended malt.

Japanese whisky has become considerably more expensive in recent years. That makes a bottle from Japan at thirty-eight euros special.

What is pure malt?

A Japanese term for whisky that consists entirely of malt but does not come from one distillery. In Scotland that is called a blended malt. The difference with an ordinary blend is that there is no grain whisky in it, and that makes the taste fuller.

Frequently asked questions about Hatozaki

How much Hatozaki does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Three bottles: the blend, the Pure Malt and the Triple Cask Reserve.

Where does Hatozaki come from?

From Hyogo Prefecture near Kobe, on the Akashi Strait. The name refers to the Hatozaki lighthouse, the oldest surviving stone lighthouse in Japan.

What is pure malt?

A Japanese term for whisky made entirely of malt but coming from more than one distillery. In Scotland that is called a blended malt.

Why is Hatozaki cheaper than other Japanese whisky?

Because the brand does not carry age-statement bottles from well-known distilleries. Anyone who wants to get to know Japanese whisky without spending a hundred euros will get furthest here.

Which Hatozaki should you try first?

The Pure Malt, if you want to drink it neat. The regular blend is pleasant in a highball, the classic Japanese way: whisky with plenty of ice and sparkling water.
