The bottles
Six bottles from Clermont.
Seven generations of Beam
- Jim Beam in five facts
- 1795Jacob Beam sells his first barrel of whiskey.
- 1933after Prohibition, the distillery in Clermont is rebuilt.
- 1943the brand name Jim Beam comes into use.
- 2014Suntory takes over Beam.
- Devil’s Cutmade with whiskey that is recovered from the cask wood.
The Beam family has been distilling in Kentucky since 1795, when Jacob Beam sold his first barrel. After Prohibition, James Beauregard Beam, whom everyone called Jim, rebuilt the distillery in Clermont. His name only appeared on the label in 1943.
The range shows clearly what age and wood do. The White Label is the base, the Black has matured longer, the Double Oak goes into a second, charred cask after the first.
The Devil’s Cut owes its name to a reversal of the angel’s share: where the angels take their share by evaporation, whiskey also remains behind in the wood. That is extracted and brought back into the bottle. Jim Beam has belonged to Suntory since 2014.
The angel’s share evaporates; the devil’s cut stays in the wood.
