Why here

From new make to ten years

Kingsbarns is still young, and that is exactly what makes the range interesting: we have the unaged Spirit Drink next to a ten-year-old from the very first casks. That way you taste what ten years of wood does to the same spirit.

In addition Balcomie on sherry casks, Bell Rock and two bottles at cask strength. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

The idea of a caddie

  • Kingsbarns in five facts
  • CaddieDouglas Clement came up with it on the golf course at Kingsbarns.
  • 2014opening on St Andrew’s Day, 30 November.
  • 2015in March the first cask is full.
  • Wemyssthe family behind Wemyss Malts funds and owns the distillery.
  • 100 mdeep is its own water source.

Douglas Clement worked as a caddie at Kingsbarns Golf Links and noticed that golfers asked where whisky was made nearby. The answer was: nowhere. From that idea grew a distillery in a converted nineteenth-century farm at East Newhall Farm, close to St Andrews in Fife.

The Wemyss family, known for Wemyss Malts, came on board in 2012 and financed the construction. The distillery opened in 2014 on St Andrew’s Day; the first cask was filled in March 2015. The first general bottling, Dream to Dram, appeared in January 2019.

Kingsbarns works with a single pair of pear-shaped stills, barley from Fife and water from its own well of well over a hundred metres deep. The cuts are made by hand instead of automatically.

A distillery conceived for a golf course, and built in an old farm barn.

Six different bottles, from the unaged Spirit Drink to a ten-year-old. All six are available at the moment.

What is the difference between Balcomie and Bell Rock?

Balcomie matures in sherry casks. Bell Rock is made from casks from the first production year, with a large share of oloroso alongside bourbon.

What is Spirit Drink?

The unaged distillate, as it comes from the still. It may not be called whisky because it has not yet spent three years in wood.
