Why here

A twelve-year-old on Pichon Baron casks

The twelve-year-old we have is finished on casks from Chateau Pichon Baron in Pauillac. You rarely come across that with Irish whiskey. There is also a twenty-one-year-old.

If you are not sure which one you need, give us a quick call. That is what we are here for.

The bottles

Two bottles, both at 46 percent.

About the brand

From private stock to brand

  • Knappogue in four facts
  • 1467Knappogue Castle is built by the MacNamara clan.
  • 1966Mark Edwin Andrews buys the castle and builds up a stock of whiskey of his own.
  • 1998his son launches Knappogue Castle as a brand.
  • 2021Irish Distillers takes over the brand.

Knappogue Castle stands in County Clare and dates from 1467. In 1966 it was bought by the American Mark Edwin Andrews, who built up his own stock of Irish whiskey there. The most famous of these is the 1951 vintage, which matured for thirty-six years before being bottled in 1987.

His son turned it into a real brand in 1998. Since 2021 Knappogue Castle has been owned by Irish Distillers, part of Pernod Ricard.

Important to know: Knappogue Castle does not distil itself. The brand buys whiskey from Irish distilleries, including Cooley, and puts its own stamp on it with the maturation and the finish. That is not unusual in Ireland, but we prefer to say it out loud.

A castle from 1467, a private stock from the 1960s, and since 1998 a brand.
