American rye must contain at least 51 percent rye; the rest is usually corn or barley. Kyro uses one hundred percent rye, all of it Finnish. That is a very different starting point.

Kyro was founded on 29 August 2012 by five Finns. The company is based in Isokyro, in a former cheese factory from 1908 on the river Kyronjoki, where the name also comes from.
The distillery first became known for gin (the Napue won a major prize in 2015), but the starting point was always rye whisky. That appeared in 2019.
What Kyro does differently is the grain. The mashbill consists of one hundred percent Finnish rye, distilled in pot stills and aged in American oak. In the United States 51 percent rye is enough to call something rye; here there is nothing else in it.
