Why here

The whole new range, plus the bottles from before

In 2023 Glenglassaugh received a completely new core range: the twelve-year-old, Sandend and the peated Portsoy. We have all three. In addition, the bottles from the period before are still there (Revival, Evolution, Torfa and Octaves), and those are slowly disappearing from the trade.

Also nice are the two Claxton’s from the same 2018 vintage: the same whisky, one cask a regular barrel, the other an octave of fifty litres. Side by side you see straight away what cask size does. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

More silence than production

  • The distillery in five moments
  • 1875Colonel James Moir founds Glenglassaugh near Portsoy.
  • 1907Production stops; more than fifty years of silence follow.
  • 1960Rebuilt and reopened; the whisky mostly goes into blends.
  • 1986–2008Closed for twenty-two years.
  • 2023A completely new core range under Rachel Barrie.

Glenglassaugh stands on Sandend Bay on the Moray Firth, just outside Speyside and close to the harbour village of Portsoy. The name means something like ‘valley of the grey-green place’. Colonel James Moir chose the site in 1875 for two reasons: the spring on Durne Hill and the good barley from the area.

What stands out about the history is how many years nothing was distilled. After 1907 the distillery stood idle for well over half a century; after reopening in 1960 the whisky went almost entirely into blends such as Cutty Sark and The Famous Grouse; and in 1986 it closed again, for twenty-two years. It was not until 2008 that it got going again. That explains why so little old stock exists from this distillery.

Since 2016 Brown-Forman has been the owner, with Rachel Barrie as whisky maker. She also oversees GlenDronach and BenRiach. In 2023 she put together a new core range around the coastal character of the house, which she herself describes as salted caramel. In 2025 production was scaled back and partly moved to BenRiach.

Portsoy served as a filming location for Peaky Blinders, where the harbour was used for the smuggling of liquor.

Sandend or Portsoy?

Two bottles without age statement, both named after the surroundings. Sandend is the bay where the distillery sits and is unpeated, finished on manzanilla, a dry sherry that has a salty note of its own. Portsoy is the harbour village five kilometres further on and is the peated version. Same house, same coast, two very different bottles.

Frequently asked questions about Glenglassaugh

How many Glenglassaugh does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Eleven bottles, all available immediately: the complete new core range, five bottles from the pre-2023 range and three single casks.

Which Glenglassaugh should you try first?

The 12 Years Old or the Sandend. The first shows the coastal house style at its calmest, the second is more powerful thanks to the manzanilla finish. If you like smoke, Portsoy is the bottle to go for.

What is the difference between Sandend and Portsoy?

Sandend is unpeated and finished in manzanilla casks; Portsoy is the peated version. Both are named after the surroundings: Sandend is the bay by the distillery, Portsoy the harbour village five kilometres further on.

Why is old Glenglassaugh so rare?

Because the distillery lay idle from 1986 to 2008, and before that for more than half a century between 1907 and 1960. There is simply little old stock.

Where does the salty character come from?

From its location. The distillery stands on Sandend Bay on the Moray Firth, with the warehouses right by the sea. Whisky maker Rachel Barrie describes the house aroma as salted caramel.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Glenglassaugh abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
