Why here

Four vintages of the same series side by side

Macallan releases a Classic Cut and a Harmony Collection every year. Anyone who wants one usually finds only the latest. We have four Classic Cuts in a row (2022 through 2025) and five Harmony bottles.

In addition the core range of Sherry Oak and Double Cask, three Rare Casks and seven casks from independent bottlers. If you do not know which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The core range

Sherry Oak and Double Cask, from twelve to eighteen years.

About the distillery

Small stills and casks from Jerez

  • Macallan in five facts
  • 1824Alexander Reid is granted the licence to distil.
  • Easter Elchiesthe estate near Craigellachie where the distillery stands.
  • Smallthe stills are remarkably small, which gives a lot of copper contact.
  • Jerezwhere the sherry casks are made to measure and filled.
  • 2018the new distillery opens, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners.

The Macallan stands on the Easter Elchies estate near Craigellachie in Speyside. Alexander Reid, farmer and teacher, was granted a licence to distil there in 1824. Since 1999 the house has belonged to Edrington.

Two things determine the flavour. The stills are small (the house itself calls them curiously small), which gives a lot of contact with copper and produces a full, fruity distillate. And the cask: Macallan has oak casks made to measure in Jerez de la Frontera and filled with sherry before they come to Scotland. Sherry Oak relies on European oak, Double Cask combines European and American oak.

In June 2018 a new distillery building opened, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and nominated for the Stirling Prize in 2019. For these ranges the colour in the bottle comes entirely from the cask; nothing is added.

Distilling small and investing big in casks: that is the recipe.

About the bottlers

Macallan without a Macallan label

  • What you see at a bottler
  • Speymaltthe name under which Gordon & MacPhail bottles its Macallan.
  • Vintageinstead of an age, a distillation year is often printed on it.
  • Cask strengthundiluted, here up to well over sixty percent.
  • 1cask per bottle for most of these bottlings.

Alongside the bottles from the distillery itself, there are Macallans from independent bottlers: houses that buy casks and decide for themselves when they go into the bottle. Those bottles look different and are often much stronger.

Gordon & MacPhail has the longest connection with the distillery and bottles under the name Speymalt. Douglas Laing uses its XOP series for the oldest casks, Signatory bottles under its own name and McGibbon’s is an older series.

What you find on such a label is usually not an age but a vintage, plus the cask number and the strength. We have seven of those bottles, from eleven to thirty-one years old.

Speymalt, XOP or Signatory: the same distillery, a different label.

From independent bottlers

Seven casks, from eleven to thirty-one years old.

Frequently asked questions about The Macallan

How much Macallan does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Thirty-two different bottles: twenty-five from the distillery itself and seven from independent bottlers. All thirty-two are currently available.

What is the difference between Sherry Oak and Double Cask?

Sherry Oak relies entirely on European oak that has been filled with sherry in Jerez. Double Cask combines that European oak with American oak, which adds a softer, vanilla-like side.

Why are Macallan’s stills so small?

Small stills give relatively much contact with copper. That produces a fuller, fruitier distillate. The house itself calls them curiously small.

What is the Classic Cut?

A limited edition that returns every year, each time at high strength. We have four consecutive vintages: 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025.

Is colouring added to Macallan?

With the Sherry Oak and Double Cask ranges the colour comes entirely from the cask; nothing is added.
