The neighbour of Highland Park
Scapa is on Mainland Orkney, on the north shore of Scapa Flow just south of Kirkwall, about eight hundred metres from Highland Park. Together they are the two northernmost distilleries on the island.
The clearest difference from its neighbour lies in the malt. Highland Park uses its own peated malt; Scapa uses only unpeated malt, bought from maltings on the mainland. Its own malting floors closed in 1966.

The last Lomond
- The distillery in brief
- 1885Founded by Macfarlane & Townsend.
- 1994–2004Closed, with limited production from 1997.
- LomondThe special still design.
- UnpeatedThe malt, unlike at the neighbours.
As its wash still, Scapa uses a Lomond still: a still with a wide, cylindrical, water-cooled neck instead of the classic swan neck. That design was devised in 1955 to be able to make different types of spirit in a single still.
The adjustable plates that gave the design its name have been removed. The still now works as an ordinary wash still, but the wide cooled neck remains and provides extra reflux and copper contact. Scapa is therefore often called the last working Lomond in whisky production, with the caveat that Lomond stills are still running elsewhere, just not for single malt.
The distillery was idle from 1994 to 2004, with limited production by Highland Park staff from 1997. After a renovation it is running at full capacity again; since 2015 there has been a visitor centre.
The same island wind, a completely different malt.
What these bottles go with
If you know Orkney for the smoke of Highland Park, you taste here the other side of the same island: unpeated, with long fermentations and a fruity character.
Interesting to put a bottle of Highland Park next to it. Same island, eight hundred metres apart, and yet hardly to be confused.
