Why here

A Dutch cask at 66.4 percent

The eleven-year-old single cask #2519 was specially selected for the Dutch market and goes into the bottle at 66.4 percent. That is the strongest Highland Park we have ever had, and casks like this do not come back.

In addition the complete age ladder from ten to thirty years, the three Orkney bottles (Land, Sea and Skye), six from the Viking and Warrior series and six casks from independent bottlers, including two 1989 vintages. If you are not sure which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

Highland Park is near Kirkwall on Orkney and is the most northerly distillery in Scotland, closer to Oslo than to London. The name refers not to the Highlands but to High Park, the piece of land above the town where it began. According to tradition this was the work of Magnus Eunson, church officer and butcher by day, whisky smuggler by night, who hid his casks under the pulpit while the taxman searched his house.

Two things make the whisky. The house still malts part of the barley itself on its own floors, and dries it over peat from Hobbister Moor, eleven kilometres away. Because of the wind, hardly any trees grow on Orkney, so that peat consists not of decayed wood but of heather. That gives a smoke that is floral and sweet rather than medicinal, very different from Islay and far more subtle.

For the casks the house goes even further: it buys American and European oak itself, has casks made from it in Spain, which are then filled with oloroso for two years and afterwards go back empty to Orkney. No caramel is added; every colour in the bottle comes from the wood.

About a fifth of the malt is peated. That is precisely why the smoke is an undertone and never the leading role.

Why does every bottle have a Viking name?

Orkney belonged to Norway until 1468, and the Norwegian influence can still be seen everywhere. Highland Park uses that history in its ranges: Viking Honour, Viking Pride, Valfather, Harald, Sigurd, Ragnvald. They are not separate distillates but different cask compositions and ages under a shared theme.

Frequently asked questions about Highland Park

How much Highland Park does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Thirty-one bottles, all available immediately: the core range, the three Orkney bottles, four at cask strength, six from the Viking series, six from bottlers and six at the top end.

Is Highland Park a smoky whisky?

Light. About a fifth of the malt is peated, and the peat comes from Hobbister Moor, where the wind leaves hardly any trees. As a result the peat consists of heather and the smoke is floral and sweet instead of medicinal as on Islay.

Which Highland Park should you try first?

The 12 Years Old, also known as Viking Honour. That is the house’s signature: honey, light smoke and sherry. The ten-year-old is the cheaper way in.

What is special about the Dutch cask?

That is a single cask, number 2519, eleven years old and selected especially for the Dutch market. It goes into the bottle undiluted at 66.4 percent and will not return.

Why do the bottles have Viking names?

Because Orkney belonged to Norway until 1468 and Norse influence is visible everywhere there. Viking Honour, Viking Pride, Harald, Sigurd and Ragnvald are different cask compositions under that theme.

Does Highland Park really make its own malt?

In part, yes. The house still has working malting floors where the barley is turned by hand, good for about a fifth of its needs. That has become rare in Scotland.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Highland Park abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
