Why here

Where the whiskey comes from

To be honest: the whiskey in the Silkie bottles has so far not been distilled in Donegal. It is bought in from Great Northern Distillery in Dundalk, blended to a Sliabh Liag recipe and bottled by hand in Carrick. The company does not shout about it, but does not deny it either.

Since the start of 2022, Sliabh Liag has been distilling for itself, in its own distillery near Ardara. That distillate appears under the name Ardara, not under Silkie. So for the time being Silkie remains what it is: a blend put together at its own discretion.

The range

The bottles we have in stock

The range runs from almost smoke-free to distinctly smoky; the difference lies in how much peated malt goes into it.

About the brand

The seal that came ashore

  • The company in brief
  • 1841The last legal distillery in Donegal closes.
  • 2014Sliabh Liag Distillers founded.
  • 2016The first Silkie is released.
  • 2022Our own distilling starts at Ardara.

Silkie or selkie is the seal from Irish and Scottish folklore that sheds its skin on land and becomes human. In the story the brand tells, she arrives at Silver Strand on the Donegal coast, falls in love with a fisherman and is eventually called back by the sea after all.

The founders, James and Moira Doherty, returned in 2014 to the Sliabh Liag peninsula with a clear thesis: Irish whiskey has become sweet and light in recent decades, while the countryside whiskey of the past did know smoke. Silkie is about bringing that smoke back, but with the softness of triple-distilled malt.

The whole series carries the prefix The Legendary. The original has only a trace of smoke; the Dark and the Midnight lean more heavily on peated malt, and the Red is the original finished in Spanish red wine casks. The stated peat levels come from the brand itself and refer to the malt, not to what remains in the glass.

Bringing smoke back into Irish whiskey, without the medicinal side of Islay.
