Why here

Four single malts from a young distillery

The Whistler is a brand that most wine and spirits shops stock with one bottle at most. We have eight, including four single malts: a ten-year-old, a seven-year-old at cask strength, a single cask of fourteen years on ruby port and one on Pedro Ximénez.

In addition there are two cask finishes (an imperial stout and an oloroso), the Triple Oak as an entry point and a honey version. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Where to start with The Whistler

Four bottles: the entry level, two cask finishes and the honey version.

About the distillery

A distillery in Drogheda again after one hundred and sixty years

  • Boann in three facts
  • 2016The distillery starts distilling in Drogheda.
  • 160years there was no whiskey distillery in that city.
  • 3styles in the Triple Oak: pot still, malt and grain.

The Whistler comes from the Boann distillery in Drogheda, in County Meath, in the Boyne Valley. The Cooney family set it up; in 2016 whiskey was distilled again in that town for the first time in a hundred and sixty years.

The house works with copper pot stills made to measure in Italy, with adjustable reflux and modern condensers. That sounds technical, but it comes down to more control over how heavy or light the distillate turns out.

Not everything in the bottle is home-grown: like many young Irish houses, Boann buys part of its whiskey from other Irish producers while its own stock is maturing. The older bottles on our shelf, such as the single cask of fourteen years, therefore come from that bought-in stock.

Eight different bottles, including four single malts. All eight are available at the moment.

Where does The Whistler come from?

From the Boann distillery in Drogheda, County Meath, in the Boyne Valley. The Cooney family set it up and in 2016 whiskey was distilled again in that town for the first time in a hundred and sixty years.

Is everything distilled at Boann itself?

Not everything. Like many young Irish houses, Boann buys part of its whiskey from other Irish producers while its own stock matures. The older bottles come from that bought-in stock.

What is the Triple Oak?

The entry-level bottle: a blend of single pot still, single malt and grain whiskey, matured in three types of wood.

Is Irish Honey also whiskey?

It is a liqueur based on whiskey with honey, at 33 percent. Legally that is not whiskey; in taste it is a good deal sweeter.
