Why here

A young distillery with a long list of one-off bottlings

Wolfburn has only been distilling since 2013 and in that time has released a remarkable number of one-off bottlings: Christmas editions, a Valentine's bottle, a Father's Day bottle, festival casks and numbered batches. These disappear from the market after one season and rarely turn up again afterwards.

We have twenty-two of them, from the entry-level bottle Aurora to the Inaugural Release: the very first bottling of the new distillery. Alongside it the core range, two festival casks and a twelve-year-old. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

Two Wolfburns, almost a century and a half apart

  • Wolfburn in five moments
  • 1821The first Wolfburn is built near Thurso.
  • 1860sThe distillery ceases to exist.
  • 1872On the map there is only a ruin left.
  • 2013A new distillery opens next to the old remains.
  • 2016The first whisky is released, three years old.

The first Wolfburn was built in 1821 near Thurso, in Caithness, at the very north of the Scottish mainland. Sometime in the 1860s that distillery ceased to exist; on the map of 1872 it is already drawn in as a ruin.

In 2013 a new distillery arrived, right next to those remains, with the same name and the same water. That water comes from the Wolf Burn, the little stream from which the house takes its name. Wolfburn is thereby the northernmost distillery on the Scottish mainland; everything further north lies on an island.

The first whisky was ready in March 2016, three years after the start. That bottle is still here, as is the Inaugural Release. For a distillery of this age that is unusual: most first bottlings have long since disappeared from the market.

Everything further north than Wolfburn is on an island.

Frequently asked questions about Wolfburn

How many Wolfburn does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Twenty-two different bottles, from the regular range to one-off bottlings. All twenty-two are available at the moment. The current status is in the online shop.

Where is Wolfburn?

In Thurso, in Caithness, at the very north of the Scottish mainland. It is the northernmost distillery on that mainland; anything further north is on Orkney or another island.

How old is Wolfburn?

That depends on which one you mean. The first Wolfburn dates from 1821 and ceased to exist in the nineteenth century. The current distillery was built in 2013 next to its remains and released its first whisky in March 2016.

What is the Inaugural Release?

The very first bottling of the new distillery. Because a distillery only releases that once, it is the bottle Wolfburn collectors are looking for.

Why does Wolfburn have so many Christmas editions?

Every year the house releases a bottle for the festive season, with its own label and its own cask selection. We have four in stock: 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025.

Can I reserve a bottle and collect it in Bathmen?
