Why here

Smoke and no smoke from the same distillery

At Benriach you can do something that is possible at almost no other Speyside distillery: compare the same whisky with and without smoke side by side. The Original Ten and The Smoky Ten are the same age and come from the same house; the only difference is whether the barley was dried over a peat fire.

In addition, five single casks from Signatory, Gordon & MacPhail, Cadenhead’s, Claxton’s and Infrequent Flyers, and at the top end a 27-year-old peated one and two thirty-year-olds. Of three bottles we have exactly one left. If you are not sure which one to choose, just give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

Silent for sixty-five years, saved by the malting floor

  • The distillery in five moments
  • 1898John Duff builds Benriach next to his own Longmorn.
  • 1900After the Pattison bankruptcy, production stops.
  • 1900–1965Only the malting floor keeps running, for Longmorn.
  • 1965The stills are being fired up again.
  • 2016Brown-Forman buys the distillery.

John Duff built Benriach in 1898 on a hill near the old Riach farm, south of Elgin, right next to his own Longmorn. Between the two ran a private railway line with its own steam locomotive, the Puggy, which carried coal, barley, peat and casks back and forth.

The timing was disastrous. Two years later the whisky trader Pattison went bankrupt and dragged a large part of the industry down with it; Benriach closed in 1900 and stayed silent for sixty-five years. The fact that the building is still standing is thanks to the malting floor: it kept supplying malt to Longmorn next door all that time. In 1965 the stills ran again.

Since 2004 Benriach has put itself on the map as a single malt, since 2016 under owner Brown-Forman and with Rachel Barrie as master blender. The distillery deliberately makes several styles: unpeated, peated with mainland peat, and occasionally triple distilled.

Peated whisky from Speyside is an exception. Benriach has done it without interruption since the 1970s, with peat from the mainland: sweeter and woodier than the smoke of Islay.

What is Malting Season?

For one month a year, barley is germinated on the distillery’s original malting floor and turned by hand. That batch is kept separate and released under the name Malting Season. Only a handful of Scottish distilleries still have a working malting floor of their own.

Frequently asked questions about Benriach

How much Benriach does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Twenty bottles, all available for immediate delivery. The Twelve is temporarily sold out.

Is Benriach peated or not?

Both. Benriach makes both unpeated and peated whisky, which is unusual in Speyside. On the label it is usually in the name: The Original Ten is unpeated, The Smoky Ten peated.

Which Benriach is best to try first?

The Original Ten. If you want to know straight away what smoke does, buy The Smoky Ten as well: same house, same age, and the only difference is the peat.

Why is the smoke of Benriach different from that of Islay?

Because mainland peat is used instead of the coastal peat of Islay. That gives a sweeter, woodier smoke, less medicinal and briny.

What is the Malting Season bottling?

One month a year, barley is germinated on the distillery's own malting floor and turned by hand. That batch is bottled separately. Few Scottish distilleries still have a working malting floor.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Benriach abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
