Why here

Two countries, many native grapes

Spain and Portugal together have hundreds of native grape varieties, most of which you will hardly come across outside the Iberian Peninsula. You may know tempranillo and verdejo; alvarinho, arinto, castelão and alicante bouschet probably less so.

Among others, we stock Ramón Bilbao, Montecillo, Portia, Beronia, Principe de Viana, Terra d’Alter and Symington. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Briefly explained

Ageing on the label: crianza, reserva, gran reserva

  • Spanish designations
  • JovenYoung, little or no wood.
  • CrianzaMinimum two years, of which one year in oak.
  • ReservaAt least three years.
  • Gran ReservaAt least five years; only in good years.

Spain is one of the few countries where the label states how long a wine has aged before it was allowed to be sold. These terms are laid down by law, so they mean the same everywhere.

That makes for easy buying: a gran reserva has already done the waiting for you. It is good to know, though, that the same words outside Spain (in Chile, for example) have no legal meaning.

In Portugal it works differently: there the region says the most. The Douro is known for port but also yields robust red wine, and the coastal region of Lisboa produces fresh wines thanks to the sea breeze.

Crianza, reserva and gran reserva are not marketing terms. In Spain they are fixed by law.

Frequently asked questions about Spanish and Portuguese wine

How many Spanish and Portuguese wines does ’t Bockje have?

More than a hundred and twenty, from sixty-one different houses.

What do crianza, reserva and gran reserva mean?

Legally defined ageing requirements in Spain. Crianza is at least two years old with at least one year in oak, reserva at least three years and gran reserva at least five.

Do those terms also apply outside Spain?

No. In Chile, for example, reserva and gran reserva are designations of the house itself, with no legal meaning.

What is cava?

Spanish sparkling wine with a second fermentation in the bottle, just like champagne. The grapes and the region differ, which makes cava slightly sturdier and earthier.

What makes Portuguese wine special?

The native grapes. Portugal has well over two hundred, most of which are hardly planted outside the country.

Does ’t Bockje ship wine abroad?

Yes, to about forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you would like to know whether your country is included.
