Four times Grolsch without alcohol
Grolsch was early. On 6 March 2017 the brewery launched Grolsch 0.0% and two alcohol-free radlers at the same time. In March 2019 the Weizen 0.0% was added.
What Grolsch does differently from a number of other big brewers: the alcohol is not removed at the end. The brewery says that its own yeast strain and a modern brewing technique ensure that no alcohol is produced during fermentation. The basis remains the same as for the regular pilsner: carefully chosen barley malt, two kinds of hops and the brewery’s spring water.
We have four of them on the shelf: the pilsner, the wheat beer, the radler by the bottle and that same radler in a tray of twenty-four.

Roughly speaking, there are two ways to make beer without alcohol. The first is to brew ordinary beer and remove the alcohol again at the end. The second is to steer the fermentation so that hardly any alcohol is formed. Grolsch takes the second route.
For this the brewery uses its own yeast strain in combination with what it calls the most modern brewing technology. The raw materials remain the same as for the regular beer: carefully selected barley malt, two kinds of hops (one for bitterness, one for aroma) and the brewery’s spring water.
The Weizen 0.0% follows the same principle, but with wheat. It is a naturally cloudy beer; the brewery names clove and fruit as the characteristic aromas of the style. The Radler 0.0% is not a regular beer but a mix: the alcohol-free pilsner is blended with fruit juice.
At Grolsch the alcohol is not taken out; it never forms in the first place.
What exactly does 0.0 mean?
In the Netherlands it is laid down when you may put alcohol-free on a label. Under the Dutch decree on reserved designations, a beer may be called alcohol-free at no more than 0.1 percent alcohol. If it contains more, up to and including 1.2 percent, it is called low-alcohol.
The designation 0.0 does not appear as a separate category in those rules. Brewers use it themselves for beer that stays below the limit for alcohol-free. Grolsch puts 0.0% on the label of all four beers on this page.
That is why it helps to look at the number and not just at the word. A beer of 0.3 percent (you see them more and more often) may not legally call itself alcohol-free beer; that is low-alcohol beer.
With beer from abroad it also pays to check. Terms such as alkoholfrei or alcohol free follow the rules of the country of origin, and that limit is not set at the same point everywhere.

Frequently asked questions about Grolsch 0.0
Which alcohol-free Grolsch does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Four: Grolsch 0.0% in a bottle of 30 centilitres, Grolsch Weizen 0.0%, Grolsch Radler 0.0% and the same radler in a tray of twenty-four bottles.
How much alcohol is there in Grolsch 0.0?
The label states 0.0 per cent. In the Netherlands the designation alcohol-free may be used at no more than 0.1 per cent alcohol; this is laid down in the Warenwetbesluit gereserveerde aanduidingen.
What is the difference between 0.0 per cent, 0.3 per cent and low-alcohol?
Alcohol-free may appear on the label at no more than 0.1 per cent alcohol. Above that limit and up to and including 1.2 per cent, it is called low-alcohol. A beer of 0.3 per cent is therefore low-alcohol and not alcohol-free beer. The designation 0.0 does not appear separately in the rules; brewers use it for beer that stays below the alcohol-free limit.
How does Grolsch make its alcohol-free beer?
Not by removing the alcohol afterwards. According to the brewery, its own yeast strain and a modern brewing technique ensure that no alcohol is formed during fermentation. The ingredients remain barley malt, two kinds of hops and the brewery’s spring water.
Since when has Grolsch 0.0% existed?
Since 6 March 2017. That is when Grolsch launched the 0.0% pilsner and two alcohol-free radlers at the same time. The Weizen 0.0% was added in March 2019.
Where is Grolsch brewed?
In Boekelo, municipality of Enschede, on the Brouwerslaan. Grolsch has been owned by Asahi Group Holdings since October 2016.
Is Grolsch Radler 0.0% also beer?
It is a mix: alcohol-free pilsner mixed with fruit juice. The label says 0.0 percent.
