About Hertog Jan
Hertog Jan comes from Arcen, a village on the Maas in North Limburg. There, in 1915, four small brewers together founded a steam brewery, the Arcense Stoombierbrouwerij. The name refers to John I, Duke of Brabant, who has appeared on every label for decades.
Hertog Jan started as a brand name of the drinks wholesaler De Kikvorsch in Deest; the top-fermented beer was brewed in Arcen. In the early 1980s the brand played a major role in the revival of Dutch beer culture. Since 1995 the brewery has been part of Interbrew, today's AB InBev, and since 1998 it has officially been called Hertog Jan Brouwerij.
In the white brewery building on the Kruisweg there are still copper brew kettles, and in the cellars lie bottles of Grand Prestige from different vintages. Grand Prestige is the brewery's premium line. Since 2017 a Grand Prestige Vatgerijpt has been released every year, each time matured in a different type of cask.
Besides pilsener, Hertog Jan Brouwerij brews a weizener, a bock beer, a tripel and Karakter, among others. The brewery in Arcen can be visited on a guided tour; the building does have narrow corridors and lots of stairs.

Why is pils harder to brew than it seems?
- On this shelf
- pils3 beers from this brewery
- weizen1 beer from this brewery
- bock1 beer from this brewery
- tripel1 beer from this brewery
Precisely because there is nothing to hide in it. A pils is light, clear and dry, and you taste every little flaw in the brew straight away. In a robust tripel or stout, a deviation like that disappears into the rest of the flavour.
Pils is a bottom-fermented beer: it ferments at a low temperature and then matures cold for weeks. That takes time and cold storage space, whereas an ale can be ready in days.
Serve pils cold, at around four to six degrees, with a generous head.
You cannot hide anything in a pils. That is why many brewers consider it the most difficult style.
