Why here

An obstler from apple country

South Tyrol is one of the largest apple regions in Europe. In the valleys around Meran and Lana the orchards reach up to the mountain wall. The fruit that comes from there is also distilled.

An obstler is a distillate of apples and pears together; Obst is German for fruit. In our description this bottle is called an Apfel-Edelbrand: a distilled apple brandy from South Tyrol.

The bottle is 38 percent, which is usual for the style. We have one in stock.

What is an Edelbrand?

With an Edelbrand all the alcohol comes from the fruit itself: it is fermented and then distilled. No neutral alcohol may be added and no sugar goes in. That distinguishes it from a Geist, in which fruit is steeped in neutral alcohol and distilled along with it, and from a liqueur, which is sweetened.

About the brand

From monastery distillery to family business

  • The house in brief
  • 1884Monks of the monastery in Lana begin distilling.
  • LanaThe village near Meran in South Tyrol.
  • The Pircher familyTook over the company in the mid-twentieth century.
  • WilliamsThe pear the distillery is best known for.

The distillery gives 1884 as its starting year. In that year monks of the Teutonic Order monastery in Lana began making fruit distillates. The Pircher family took over that business in the mid-twentieth century and continued it under its own name.

Lana lies near Merano, in the middle of the apple-growing area of South Tyrol. The distillery makes fruit distillates, grappa and liqueurs; it is best known for its Williams Christ pear distillate.

South Tyrol belongs to Italy politically, but the regional language is German. That explains why you find both grappa and obstler here: the Italian and the Alpine traditions mingle.

Why is grappa next to obstler in South Tyrol?

Grappa is Italian and is distilled from pressed grape remains. Obstler belongs to the Alpine tradition and comes from apple and pear. South Tyrol is the region where the two meet: there is winegrowing and orchard fruit, which is why distilleries such as Pircher make both.

Which bottle

Who is this bottle for?

If you have been on holiday in South Tyrol and are looking for what came to the table after the meal, this is the bottle. It should be served cool in a small glass.

If you know grappa and would like to hear what the same region makes from fruit instead of grapes, this is a logical step.
