Apricot in a litre bottle
Marille is the Austrian word for apricot, and a Marillenschnaps is an apricot spirit. Together with Williams pear and Zwetschge plum, it is one of the best-known kinds in the country.
According to the description, the apricots come from sunny areas in the foothills of the Alps. After harvesting they are puréed and double-distilled, after which the distillate matures for several years in earthenware, glass demijohns and steel tanks. There is no ageing in oak; the spirit therefore stays clear.
This bottle is one litre, which is unusual on this shelf: most bottles are 70 or 50 centilitres.

Prinz Marillen Schnaps
Apricot spirit, double-distilled and matured for several years in earthenware, glass demijohns and steel tanks. One litre, 40 per cent according to the label.
€ 33,99
Why mature in glass and earthenware?
Oak imparts colour and wood notes. With a fruit spirit that is often not wanted: the fruit should remain the story. Glass, earthenware and stainless steel impart nothing. The spirit does get time in them to settle, but stays clear and dry.
Four generations on Lake Constance
- The house in brief
- 1886The founding year the distillery goes by.
- HörbranzThe village in the Leiblachtal in Vorarlberg.
- FourThe number of generations in the business.
- FruitApricot, pear, berries and other fruit from the region.
Fein-Brennerei Prinz is located in Hörbranz, in the Leiblachtal in Vorarlberg, the westernmost state of Austria, close to Lake Constance. The company gives 1886 as its founding year and is now four generations old.
The distillery makes spirits and liqueurs from local fruit: apricot, pear, berries and more. Alongside classic distillation, the house uses its own process, which it calls the Prinz Hafele-Brand-Verfahren.
There is a farm shop and the distillery can be visited. In the Netherlands, Prinz is best known for its fruit spirits and the liqueurs based on them.
Marillenbrand or Marillenlikör?
With a Brand or Schnaps, the fruit is fermented and distilled; no sugar is added and the spirit is dry. With a Likör, sugar is added and the alcohol content is lower. Prinz makes both. This bottle is the dry version.
Who is this bottle for?
Apricot spirit is one of the most accessible kinds on this shelf: the fruit is instantly recognisable and it is not an acquired taste.
The litre bottle makes sense if you know you will pour from it more often, for example after a meal or on an occasion. If you are looking for a smaller bottle to try, just give us a call; we will see what else is on the shelf.
