Why here

The benchmark for a gin and tonic

For many people Gordon’s is the gin for a gin and tonic: dry, clean and with the juniper clearly up front. Precisely because it contains few botanicals, it does not disappear behind the tonic.

We have the classic bottle in three sizes and three flavour variants: pink, Sicilian lemon and passion fruit. If you are not sure which to choose, just give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the brand

A recipe that has been secret for more than 250 years

  • The brand in four moments
  • 1769Alexander Gordon starts a distillery in Southwark, London.
  • 1786Move to Clerkenwell, for better water.
  • 1898Merging with Charles Tanqueray & Co.
  • 1998Production moves to Cameronbridge in Scotland.

Alexander Gordon, a Londoner of Scottish descent, started a distillery in Southwark in 1769. He chose that district for its clean water. In a city where most gin was barely drinkable, a pure bottle stood out at once.

The difference from many contemporaries lay in what did not go in: sugar. Most gin of the time was sweetened to mask the rough base. Gordon’s left that out, and precisely that made it ‘dry’. The recipe rests on four core botanicals (juniper berry, coriander, angelica root and liquorice) and has remained secret since 1769.

In 1898 Gordon’s and Tanqueray merged; since 1998 both have been distilled at Cameronbridge in Fife. Two brands that carry London on the label and are made in Scotland.

Adding no sugar was the whole idea behind ‘dry’ gin in the eighteenth century.

Why is Gordon’s so well suited to mixing?

Because it uses few botanicals and they come through firmly. A gin with twenty botanicals can turn vague in a gin and tonic; here the juniper stays standing, even with a generous splash of tonic. That is also why you will find Gordon’s in almost every cocktail book.

Three flavour variants

Pink, Sicilian lemon and passion fruit: sweeter, and mainly meant for long drinks.

Frequently asked questions about Gordon’s

How many Gordon’s does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Six bottles: the classic London Dry in three sizes and three flavour variants: pink, Sicilian lemon and passion fruit.

Which botanicals are in Gordon’s?

The recipe has been secret since 1769, but the core consists of four botanicals: juniper berries, coriander, angelica and liquorice root.

Why is it called ‘dry’ gin?

Because no sugar is added. In the eighteenth century gin was usually sweetened to mask the rough base; Gordon’s left that out, and that is exactly what dry gin means.

Where is Gordon’s made?

Since 1998 at Cameronbridge in Fife, Scotland, the same distillery where Tanqueray is made. The brand began in 1769 in Southwark, London.

Which Gordon’s should you choose?

The classic London Dry, especially if you mix it. The flavoured variants are sweeter and mainly meant for long drinks with plenty of ice.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Gordon’s abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
