Why here

The classic alongside five detours

The regular Tanqueray is one of the most reliable gins there is: dry, firm and with juniper up front. We have it in three sizes, from a small bottle to the large bottle, plus the No. TEN that is distilled with fresh citrus fruit.

In addition, five flavour variants. The most interesting is the Malacca: it goes back to a recipe that Charles Tanqueray wrote in his notebook in 1839 and that was only retrieved much later. If you do not know which one to choose, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The classics

Charles Tanqueray was destined for a career in the church, but in 1830, at the age of twenty, he started a distillery on Vine Street in Bloomsbury, a London district known for the quality of its water. According to tradition, he tried hundreds of recipes before he was satisfied.

What came out was strikingly sober: four botanicals, nothing more. Juniper, coriander, angelica and liquorice. Where a lot of gin relies on a long list of botanicals, this recipe is strict. That is why it has lasted almost two centuries.

In the Second World War the London distillery was almost completely destroyed in a bombing raid. One still survived it, nicknamed Old Tom, and it moved to Cameronbridge in Scotland. Tanqueray has been made there ever since, on the same site as a large grain distillery.

The name Tanqueray is on the bottle, but the gin has not come from London since the war.

What does London Dry mean?

A production method, not an origin. All the botanicals must be taken along during distillation and nothing may be added afterwards except water and a small amount of sugar. A London Dry may therefore be made anywhere in the world: Tanqueray comes from Scotland. What is not allowed: colouring, flavouring or sweetness added after distillation.

Five flavour variants

From blackcurrant and Seville orange to a spicy recipe from 1839.

Frequently asked questions about Tanqueray

How much Tanqueray does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Ten bottles, all available immediately: the London Dry in three sizes, the No. TEN and five flavour variants.

What is in the regular Tanqueray?

Four botanicals: juniper berry, coriander, angelica root and liquorice. The recipe dates from 1838 and has not changed since.

What is the difference between Tanqueray and Tanqueray No. TEN?

No. TEN is made with fresh citrus fruit in the still instead of dried peel, plus chamomile. That gives a fresher, rounder gin intended above all for the martini.

What is Malacca?

A spicy, slightly sweeter gin after a recipe that Charles Tanqueray noted down in 1839, with spices from Malaysia. It was later brought back from his notebook.

Is Tanqueray still made in London?

No. The London distillery was bombed in the Second World War; one still survived and moved to Cameronbridge in Fife, Scotland. That is where Tanqueray is distilled today.

Which Tanqueray should you try first?

The standard London Dry. If you want to drink it neat or in a martini, the No. TEN is the next step.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Tanqueray abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
