Navy gin with a real naval history
Navy strength is mostly a sales term these days: many brands put a strong bottle alongside their range and call it that. With Hayman’s there is more behind it: from 1863 the family actually supplied gin to the British navy, at the Royal Dock in Deptford.
Besides that Royal Dock we have the classic London Dry, a citrus version and a gin liqueur. If you are not sure which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Five generations in the same family
- The family in four moments
- 1863Pharmacist James Burrough buys a distillery in Chelsea.
- 1863 e.v.Supplying gin to the navy, at the Royal Dock in Deptford.
- 1987Christopher Hayman continues the family tradition after the sale of the company.
- 2018Back to London: the distillery is coming to Balham.
The history of Hayman’s begins with the same man as that of Beefeater: James Burrough, a pharmacist who bought a distillery in Chelsea for four hundred pounds in 1863. His descendants are the Hayman family, who can call themselves England’s longest continuous family of gin distillers.
When the original company was sold in 1987, the Beefeater brand went with it. Christopher Hayman continued the family line under his own name, and his children James and Miranda now run the company, the fifth generation. In 2018 the distillery returned to London, to Balham, a few kilometres from where it began.
Ten botanicals are used and a distillation takes two days. That is slow; most houses are done within a day.
The navy demanded a high strength, so that gunpowder would still ignite if gin was spilled over a cask.
What is Royal Dock?
The Royal Dock in Deptford was for centuries the place where the British navy obtained its provisions. Henry VIII founded it in 1513. From 1863 the family supplied a gin at 57 percent there. That strength was not bravado but a requirement: at that percentage gunpowder still burns when gin is poured over it, so a sailor could check on the spot that it had not been watered down.
Frequently asked questions about Hayman’s
How many Hayman’s does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Five bottles: the London Dry, the citrus version, the Royal Dock navy strength, a gin liqueur and the Sloe Gin.
What is the connection to Beefeater?
The same founder. James Burrough bought a distillery in Chelsea in 1863 and came up with Beefeater; the Hayman family descends from him. When the company was sold in 1987 the Beefeater brand went with it, and Christopher Hayman continued the family line under his own name.
What does navy strength mean?
Gin at 57 percent. At that strength gunpowder still ignites if gin is spilled over it. That is how the navy checked that the ration had not been watered down. Hayman’s supplied that gin from 1863 to the Royal Dock in Deptford.
Which Hayman’s should you try first?
The London Dry. If you want something stronger for a sturdy gin and tonic or a gimlet, the Royal Dock is the bottle to take.
How many herbs are in it?
Ten, and a distillation takes two days. That is slow; most houses are done within a day.
Does ’t Bockje also ship Hayman’s abroad?
Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
