Why here

The last big gin still made in London

London appears on countless gin bottles, but hardly anyone still distils there. Gordon’s and Tanqueray left for Scotland in 1998. Beefeater stayed, and is still made in Kennington.

We have the classic bottle, the 24 that includes Chinese and Japanese tea, and two fruity versions. If you do not know which one you need, just give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the brand

A pharmacist who let it soak for twenty-four hours

  • The brand in four moments
  • 1863James Burrough buys a distillery in Chelsea for 400 pounds.
  • 1876He puts together the recipe that would become Beefeater.
  • 1908Move to Lambeth.
  • 1958To Kennington, where the distillery still stands.

James Burrough was a pharmacist before he became a distiller. In 1863 he bought an existing distillery in Chelsea for four hundred pounds; well over ten years later he put together the recipe that would make his name.

The name refers to the Yeomen Warders, the guards of the Tower of London who have been called ‘beefeaters’ since the fifteenth century. They still appear on the label.

What gives the gin its character is the way of working: the nine botanicals (including juniper berries, coriander seed, angelica root, almond, liquorice, and the peel of lemon and Seville orange) steep for twenty-four hours in the alcohol before distilling. That is long; many houses skip that step or keep it short.

Of the big brands, Beefeater is the only one still distilled in London itself.

What does the 24 stand for?

For the twenty-four hours that the botanicals steep. In this bottle twelve botanicals go in instead of nine, including Chinese green tea and Japanese sencha. That makes it softer and slightly more floral than the classic bottle, pleasant in a martini, whereas the regular Beefeater really comes into its own in a gin and tonic.
