Why here

Cognac craftsmanship, but as gin

The Naud family distils in the Charente, the area cognac comes from. The same copper stills and the same way of working are used for this gin: the botanicals steep for seven to ten days before distillation.

According to the house, the recipe goes back to a gin formula from 1923, from the distiller who was there at the time.

About the distillery

A family distillery in cognac country

  • The house in brief
  • 1923The year of the original gin recipe.
  • CharenteThe cognac region in western France.
  • 12Herbs in the recipe.
  • 7-10 daysThat is how long the botanicals steep.

Naud is a family business in the Charente that mainly makes cognac. The gin comes from the same distillery and is distilled in copper pot stills.

What stands out is the long infusion time: the botanicals steep in the alcohol for seven to ten days before the still is fired up. With most gins that is one night or at most a day.

The recipe contains twelve herbs and spices: juniper berry, ginger, bergamot, clove, orris root, cinnamon, coriander, angelica root, cardamom, almond, cubeb pepper and nutmeg.

The botanicals steep here for seven to ten days, not a single night.

Practical

What this gin goes with

With ginger, cinnamon, clove and cardamom in the recipe, this bottle is on the warm, sweet-spicy side, closer to a wintery gin than a fresh summery one.

Bergamot brings the citrus to counter that. In a gin and tonic that works best with a neutral tonic.
