What is a kopstoot?
A kopstoot is a small glass of jenever beside a glass of beer, ordered together and drunk together. The jenever glass is a tulip glass of 3 to 5 cl that is poured to the brim, and the beer is usually a pilsener. The usual way: first a sip of the jenever, with the little glass on the table, then the beer. From 18 years of age.

What is in a kopstoot?
A kopstoot consists of two glasses: a small tulip glass of jenever of 3 to 5 cl and a glass of beer next to it.
Which jenever should you choose for a kopstoot?
Take young jenever or young grain jenever, often 35 percent alcohol, chilled from the refrigerator.
Young jenever is the usual choice because it has a smaller share of malt wine than old jenever and is therefore more neutral in composition. Old jenever works too, but it calls for different handling: room temperature instead of chilled. Corenwijn is rarely used for a kopstoot, because a bottle with a lot of malt wine leaves little room next to a pils. If you are unsure which bottle suits your beer, ask at the counter in Bathmen.
Which beer goes with a kopstoot?
A pilsner of around 5 percent is the usual choice, served cold in a flute or a small pilsner glass.
A fluitje holds about 20 cl, a vaasje about 25 cl. The beer is there to wash down the jenever with, so a light beer suits that use. Heavier beers are possible, but then the balance shifts: an 8 percent tripel next to a 35 percent shot is considerably more alcohol than the classic combination. In that case, choose a smaller beer glass.
In what order do you drink a kopstoot?
First a sip of the jenever, then the beer.
Because the glass is poured to the brim, you lean forward and take that first sip with the glass on the table. Then you lift the glass and drink the rest. The beer follows second and rinses down. Some regions actually start with a sip of beer; no rule fixes the order. What is certain is that these are two separate glasses: you do not pour them together.
How many standard drinks is a kopstoot?
A kopstoot counts as two standard drinks: one for the small glass of jenever and one for the glass of beer.

Short answer
Short answers to related questions
- Can you mix genever and beer in one glass?
- Then it is no longer a kopstoot but a mixed drink. With a kopstoot the two glasses stay separate.
- Can a kopstoot also be made with oude jenever?
- That is possible. Old jenever has a larger share of malt wine than young jenever and is served at room temperature.
- How do you pour a glass of jenever?
- To the brim, so full that you cannot lift the glass without spilling. Take the first sip with the glass on the table.
- Does anything else go with a kopstoot?
- A glass of water on the side is customary. Nothing else: a kopstoot is two glasses, no more.
- From what age may you have a kopstoot?
- Vanaf 18 jaar. NIX18: geen alcohol onder de 18, ook niet een enkele borrel.
