Why here

Must and cognac, in one bottle

Pineau des Charentes is made by mixing fresh or lightly fermented grape must with cognac. This addition stops the fermentation, and sweetness from the grape remains. The whole then matures in oak casks.

That makes pineau a fortified drink and not a spirit. It has its own appellation and is usually at seventeen percent, exactly what is on this bottle.

Giboin makes it at the Domaine l’Hermitage in the Borderies, the smallest of the six crus of the Cognac region.

How long pineau matures

The rules require at least eighteen months of ageing, of which at least eight months in oak. After five years a pineau may be called vieux, after ten years très vieux.

About the house

Two estates, sixty kilometres apart

  • The house in brief
  • 1790The ancestors plant the first vineyard at l’Hermitage.
  • 13 haThe size of l’Hermitage in the Borderies.
  • 8 haThe second estate, Apremont in the southern Charente.
  • BorderiesThe cru this pineau comes from.

Cognac Giboin works with two estates some sixty kilometres apart. L’Hermitage covers thirteen hectares in the Borderies; Apremont eight hectares in the southern Charente.

The Lambert family, ancestors of the current owners, planted the first vineyard at l’Hermitage in the 1790s. The estate has just over twelve hectares of ugni blanc and about one hectare of merlot; the house uses that merlot for pineau.

Beneath the vineyard lies limestone, with clay and flint above it. The house makes cognac from the Borderies and, alongside it, this pineau.

Terroir des Borderies, as it says on the label.

Does pineau actually belong here?

Strictly speaking, no. Pineau des Charentes is a fortified drink with its own appellation, not a spirit. It could just as well sit with the aperitifs or the fortified wines.

We have therefore written this page according to what the bottle is. Whether it moves to the online shop is a decision for the shop.

Country of origin: France. Content: 75 centilitres. Alcohol: 17 percent.

Frequently asked questions about Giboin

What is Pineau des Charentes?

A fortified drink from the Charente in western France. Fresh or lightly fermented grape must is mixed with cognac, which stops the fermentation. The result then matures in oak casks.

Is pineau distilled?

Not really. It is a vin de liqueur with its own appellation: grape must with cognac added. That this bottle is listed under other spirits says something about how the online shop is organised.

How much alcohol does it contain?

Seventeen percent according to the label. Pineau is usually between 16 and 22 percent, in practice almost always 17.

How long does pineau age?

A minimum of eighteen months in total, of which at least eight months in oak. After five years it may be called vieux, after ten years très vieux.

Where does Giboin come from?

The house has two domains: l’Hermitage of thirteen hectares in the Borderies, and Apremont of eight hectares in the Southern Charente. The ancestors planted the first vineyard at l’Hermitage in the 1790s.

What are the Borderies?

The smallest cru of the Cognac region. At l’Hermitage there is limestone in the subsoil, with clay and flint above it.
