Terroir, but for rum
In the wine world terroir is a self-evident concept: soil type, location and climate help determine how something tastes. Renegade applies that idea to rum, with bottlings per plot and per sugar cane variety.
This Etudes comes from the New Bacolet farm on Grenada. The rum from there is sturdier than that of the nearby Old Bacolet, a terroir of its own on the island.

- 4Identified terroirs.
For this rum, very sucrose-rich sugar cane of the Lacalome Red variety was harvested. New Bacolet is surrounded and sheltered by forest in the north and slopes down to the south.
Because the plot sits on a mountain slope, steeper than most Renegade farms, excavating the land was the hardest part. In total, four terroirs have been identified across ten acres.
Initially only Lacalome Red has been planted; Renegade may expand that later. What you taste in this bottle is therefore one cane variety from one slope.
One plot, one type of cane, one bottle.
What this bottle goes with
Drink it neat. At 55 percent and with a pronounced character, this is a bottle to take your time with, not to mix.
Interesting to put next to an ordinary Caribbean rum and taste the difference between single plot and blend.
